Rattle in Dash

I have an annoying rattle in the dash. Its on the passnger side, in or near the right side air vent. It sounds like it might be an electrical connector bouncing against a plastic dash part such as the liner for the vent or the glove box.

Car has only a few thousand miles on it.

Has anyone else had dash rattles?

Hi, Camerajohn,

What about some little forgotten trinket in the right door pocket [or even in the center console for that matter (there's even a tray in there too)]? Noises are funny inside a car. They can bounce (or echo) off many different surfaces making it difficlut to locate the actual source.

I think some have mentioned that they've found the speakers by the tiny front triangular windows to be loose. Take somebody else out with you & let them concentrate on the driving while you concentrate on find'g the rattle source.

You may be right about the dash though, but first I would check the easiest & most obvious before pull'g the dash apart. Good luck!!

Sounds like you have something that's ripe for the dealer.
The worst that could happen is that the noise goes away as soon as a service rep drives the car. Seems that "can not duplicate" fixes all complaints.
There use to be a lot of these complaints on the net here. The dealers seem to have a fix of "padding" the dashboard.

Dash Rattle

I was at the dealer yesterday for an oil change. However, it was one of those days when the noise was gone. This morning it was back!!

The service rep gave me his card and invited me to bring the car back (or call him) when the noise returned. However, it is 40 miles away!

I have removed the shelf from the glove box and everything from the glove box and storage area in the door. The noise is still there. I continue to feel that it is behind the dash on the far right side.

I'll keep listening every time I pass the dealer. One of these days the noise will occur at the right time and we will get the problem resolved.

BTW...I still love the car!

So let's see.

Dash Rattle #1: Emptied car of EVERYTHING and took to dealership. Did drive with shop foreman: Dash rattle, and one coming from rear, fixed (had to tighten the trunk hatch, dash was re-felted).

Dash Rattle #2: Took car back, for a dash rattle. Ended up being the visor loose.

Dash Rattle #3: Took car back, drive with shop foreman, they refelted the car. They test drove it, they had to refelt it again and did all they could. After four days.. the car was rattle-free.

Hiya all,

Don't waste unneccessary time on this.

Just Google "2010 Prius dashboard rattling" and you will get 27,000 hits. It's a known product fault & my Gen 3 Prius has been into the dealership 5 times since new.

It's a quality design fault so without question, hand the problem back to your local dealership. Some Prius' are fine & other's are not - it's a situation they cannot justify.

Good luck all.

/David.
