I have found it is easier to just stop by the side of the road, and manually key in 'mexican restaurant' or whatever I am looking for, rather than try over and over and over again to give commands that result in POI's that do not in ANY way resemble what for which I was searching. Is there any way to make this thing work right?

Probably not
As the software is upgraded with later versions of the Nav DVD, it may include improvements. Speaking slowly generally makes the recognition worse so don't drag out the words hoping that it will improve the performance. Just speak normally and cross your fingers.

And turn off the fan. I told Tyota in my recent questionair that that should happen automatically like the radio, then back on when done. Just my take but it does help. I have the most proplem with Go Home.
