Can anyone recommend a particular brand or style of VIN etching? I opted not to get the $200 VIN etching from the dealer, as there are numerous kits and services for a fraction of that price. So far, http://www.vinguard.org seems good enough, but if anyone has any prior experience, please share.
I used VINGUARD.

Check E-Bay for a cheaper price.

You might want to give your Insurance Carrier a call. My Insurer (State Farm) had VIN etching done at no cost to me on 2 other cars - was already done on my Prius when I got it.

Just my 2¢ worth.

I've got state farm and I tried calling them earlier to see if there was a discount for the VIN etching, and they acted like they'd never heard of it. I'll try calling again. Thanks!

They're aware... they just want to make up all the money they paid out for Katrina $5 at a time from people who don't know any better.

Try also calling your local police stations. I recall seeing a flyer posted at a grocery store a year or so ago that the local police department was doing a safety rodeo - checking child seats installations for free and doing window VIN etchings for $10, among some other things. Sadly I don't remember what town was doing it...
