Hybrid Toyota Supra Wins Tokachi 24-Hour race .

http://www.autoblog.com/tag/Supra%20HV-R/

Toyota Team SARD's specially-prepared Supra HV-R hybrid GT racer has won the Tokachi 24-hour endurance race in Japan. The converted Super GT-spec racing car did so convincingly, too. As the only GT-class car in the field, the Denso SARD Supra HV-R maintained a steady lead of several laps throughout the course of the race, and in the later hours, it essentially dialed things up a notch and ran away from the rest of the field. After starting from the pole position, the Supra completed 616 laps in the ensuing 24 hours -- 19 more than the second-place finisher. The victory marks the first of its type for a hybrid-powered vehicle. The Supra HV-R began life as a retired 480-horsepower Super GT racing car, which then had regenerative braking technology and a trio of hybrid motors added to it for this event. What bearing, if any, the success of the Supra HV-R has on Toyota's plans for production sports hybrid vehicles is unknown. With reports that the FT-HS concept is on its way to production, however, we'll likely be seeing how well a production-spec hybrid sports car fares soon enough.

You guys might be interested to know that Ken in Japan related to us over at PC that the Supra got 10% better FE and showed 1/2 the expected brake wear compared to the other cars in the race.

Would have been nice to see a list of the cars the Supra was racing against. We get the whole starting field listed at "Sebring."
Many awesome makes, among including the Porsches !

Ferrari, Mercedes, Ford GT's ?
I was able to google several articals about this mainly unheard of race in the racing world. Could find nothing about any factory participation and all the articles printed about the results and race seem to be only printed in Japanese.
Car and team photos appear "Nascarish" but the car would not conform with "NASCAR" standards.
Would be great to see this team in some world competition like "Le Mans, or Sebring, or Watkins Glen"

hyperion,

Let say for the time beeing that this 1st Hybrid Toyota powertrain application in a race car is prelude to green and echological sound
future "Formula 1" pinnacle of motor racing. The FIA has announced that by year 2010 all F 1 racing cars has to have hybrid, energy recovery, and clean burning.

No NASCAR here. I wonder as to why in this 21st century there is still racing car motors with "Carburetors" ?. Cleaner, less fuel burning, let use current passenger vehicle technology in its race application.

NASCAR should be renamed to NASCLAR. National American Stock Car LIKE Auto Racing. There's little that's stock in those cars today.

Or maybe NASCWBAR. With the WB standing for "Wanna Be".

Seems like this Japanese race is the same way. Nothing is stock.

Nah, NASCSAR, "National American Stock Car SHAPED Auto Racing". They aren't anything "like" stock cars, not "based" on stock cars. The fact that I know that more than a few times, a car has changed 'make' simply by exchanging the outer shell shows that.

It's sad, in college, I had a roommate who bought a car for the sole reason that it was the same 'model' as a NASCAR.
