We get our new 2004 Prius in a couple of weeks (Salsa #9) and I've heard some talk recently about Prius tire reliability. From what I can see online, this seems to mainly be a problem with the 'Classic' Prius. Have any of you seen or know abous tire problems specific to the 2004? Outside of running them above 40 psi should I be watching for anything else? Thanks for your help!

From what I have read from other online information, the 2004's utilize a different tire than the earlier models.

The earlier models were equiped with tires that had a low LRR (low rolling resistance) value. Having a low LRR along with a higher than normal weight, the factory tires did not last that long.

We have a 2002 Prius with 30,000 miles. We had to replace the tires at 27,000 miles.

From what I have read, the 2004's are equiped with tires that should last around 50,000 miles (if not more).

Good luck and enjoy the clean ride!!!

I don't have the "standard" tires on my 2004; perhaps someone that has them (and lots of miles already) might have more info?

In my case, it came with Pirelli tires; treadwear 400 vs. 160 on the 2003. Don't know if there's any direct correlation between treadwear and life (i.e. might not be 2.5x longer). However, my wife once had a Prelude she got from her parents that had Pirelli tires; got the car with 88K miles and it STILL had useable tread!

FYI, we're running the tire pressures at 44F/42R.

My '02 just recently passed 34,000 mi with the OEM Potenza's. At my most recent fill-up, I ran my finger along the treadline of the closest tire and found there's still plenty.

I had been told they were only expected to make it 30,000 mi, and their life would be drastically shortened if you use Toyota's recommended 34 psi. So, I've been running them all at about 41 psi for most of the 34,000 mi.

Either I got a really good batch of tires, or else it confirms that tire pressure in the low-40s is ideal for tire longevity in addition to mileage.
