And was this 40 psi in the front or the rear?

Do a search on "psi" and you will find many interesting opinions.

Inferring from the recommended pressures, the front should be 2 PSI higher than the rear.

You know when and how to check tire pressures, right?

Strange, the max pressue on my tires says 50#. I have been running at 42/40 and it improved the mileage a few mpg and the car handles just as well as when it was Toyota approved inflation levels.
