Two reasons,

1 With the current bluetooth implementation, your Prius is pretending to be a wireless headset. Abeit a very EXPENSIVE headset, but they don't expect a headset to handle text.

2. Toyota does not want you looking at the screen for any reason if the car is moving over 5 miles per hour. You might hurt yourself if you do.

besides, you can make phone calls above 5mph, if only using the speed dial..

I'm sure that was the subject of many an argument at Toyota HQ. They want you to be safe, while at the same time offering options to make you buy the car

Rep 1 : "They should be able to dial from the touch screen"
Rep 2 : "NO, they'll kill themselves"
Rep 1 : "OK, how about speed dial, we'll use big buttons"
Rep 2 : "ONLY if they're the same size/postion as radio presets"
Rep 1 : "WE AGREE! I may go home early today"
Rep 2 : "And Dishonor your family, better kill yourself first"
Rep 1 : <bowing> "Hai!"
