TdS Report #9: Tour de Sol Categories: Battery Electric Vehicles

After the early years of only solar-powered vehicles, the Tour de Sol added the
Battery Electric Vehicles. These are vehicles that plug-in to recharge their
batteries. (A solar panel up to 100 Watts is permitted. A bigger solar panel
puts you into the Solar Vehicle category.)

(Your Humble Reporter drives a battery electric Solectria "Force" as his every
day car, so any hint of bias towards this category in these reports just might
be real. In fact, I attended several Tours while figuring out which type of
electric vehicle is wanted. You might want to do the same.)

Vehicle Name Clean Wheels
Vehicle Number 19
Category BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLES (BEV)
vehicle type category Advanced battery
Team Name Electrovaya Challenge
Organization Electrovaya
City Mississauga
State Ont
COUNTRY Canada
Program blurb The Electrovaya Suzuki Samurai tests the viability
of using Electrovaya's Lithium Ion SuperPolymerTM
cells as a traction battery for an electric
vehicle. The cells, which have an energy density
of over 200Wh/kg, are similar to the cells used in
our PowerPads, which are designed to run laptop
computers up to 16 hours. We are excited about its
potential to power ZEVs.

that a full size motorcycle could be made all
electric. What we created is a prototype vehicle
that has the feel, look and ride of a full-sized
motorcycle. The project was very challenging, a
lot of fun and a lot of hard work. We are proud
to be part of the Tour de Sol.

Program blurb The Panther Electric Vehicle Club has been
building EVs since 1998, but we are first-time
entrants to the Tour De Sol. Students at the U.
of Pittsburgh receive credit for their work. This
year we converted a GMC Sierra to electric power.
We hope to demonstrate that electric conversion
can be performed effectively on a heavy-duty
vehicle.

Vehicle Name Phantom Sol
