Picked up my Prius today put 4 studded snows on 42/40psi and drove home. Ten miles on interstate and 40 miles on twisting mountain roads. Averaged 40.2 mpg. Anybody have any expierence with studded snows?
I had a pair years ago, in Colorado. They are great, especially on ice and frozen slush. However, keep speeds down on clear roads, because they can throw studs at highway speeds. And, take them off as soon as the threat of snow and ice is gone -- they really wear fast in the hot weather.
I always used studded tires on my '89 Civic. They are legal in ND in winter, and the Civic handled MUCH better with them on icy streets. My '04 Prius (#7) with the original tires handles much better than the Civic did with studs, probably because of the ABS, VSC, and traction control. In 1989 even ABS did not exist.
