Is there any way to make what's on the screen widthwise fit a 17-inch monitor? My screen cuts off the last half inch of everyone’s post. I know there is a scroll bar at the bottom but isn't there a way to set it and forget it before I get carpel tunnel syndrome.

some web browsers incorrectly size the tables used to display the messages. The solution to this is to upgrade your browser software. I suggest Mozilla, you can get it at http://www.mozilla.org

Well, I use Netscape 7.1 and see the same thing, but only on certain pages of certain threads: for example p.2 of the General thread "MPG" wallows across the entire screen, while p.1 is well-behaved. What th' heck?

The reason that page 2 sizes differently is that it included a really long URL linking to an article. since the URL does not have any spaces in it it is displayed on one line. the fix for this is when posting URLs you can use the The Page syntax. which will display The Page as a link without displaying the actual URL.
