Side Mirror LED Turn Indicators

I saw an interesting aftermarket kit in the New York Times today. The company is called Auto Care Products out of San Diego. The URL is:

www.auto-care.com/turnsmart.html

The neat thing about this kit is that the control unit mounts in the rear and attaches to the left and right turn signal wires. When the turn signal is activated the control unit sends a wireless signal to the LED's mounted on the side mirror to activate.

Any reason why this would not work on a 95 Prius? Thanks.

Yes, a very good reason.

There IS no 95 Prius.

Was that a trick question? :p

Oh my, I hope not! I had a cup of half-caf this morning, and I'm about to die of hyperactivity! It's AWFUL!! How could I have done this to myself??

Fortunately, when I posted it was almost 6:00 am in NJ hours. So that's not quite so bad as 5:00 am.

Sanny on caffeine. This should be good! :D
I'd like to have a firsthand look at it. How can they power bright enough LEDs with solar power in such a tiny package? Yes, I know, there's probably a small battery, but how long would that battery be able to power the LEDs in the city at night with lots of turns?

But if it works, I might be interested. Depends how effective the wide angle mirrors are and how they interfere with the regular mirror function.

A '95 Prius? Wouldn't we ALL like to have a look!! I wonder how much it's changed in the past decade...

Not really...

There IS a 1995 Prius, but it wasn't a production model, it was a concept/prototype vehicle. I doubt that the original poster has this, and most likely has a '05 (simple typo).

Here is a photo of the original prototype/concept 1995 Prius: http://www.toyota.co.jp/en/k_forum/tenji/02-e.html
Wow, leave it to Michelle to prove everybody wrong! :)

Thank you for that picture.
you could also see if you can import in the side mirrors with the turn directionals, available in Japan.

See: http://toyota.jp/prius/dop/exterior/index.html
(and yes, Japan has a different color blue than is available everywhere else...)

Hi Michelle, no need to import. The Scion special edition has them already
can these be implemented onto the Prius ? And Michelle a question for you. We need a moderator in "Private Sales section" currently has no Moderator, and a Dealer Sales Person is constantly annoying every one ! PETE whats up with that ? Michelle can help perhaps ?

Oh what a feeling to own a HSD Hybrids !
Wow, I would love to see if those turn-signal mirrors available in Japan would work on our cars. Are the US models pre-wired so they just plug in? That would be a great upgrade for US cars and looks very cool too. How much would those things cost too?
Thanks, Michael

Looks like Carson Toyota can get them but they're a bit pricey.

Wow, I am going to call Carson Toyota and see if they really are available, if they really come painted from the factory and if they are "plug and play". If they are, I will order a set for my Prius! How cool is that!
THANK YOU for pointing me in that direction.

I wonder if I'm the only one that thinks Toyota messed up using TRD as a logo. When ever I see it, I think T*RD!
They aren't plug and play unfortunately.

Here's a discussion going about one person who has installed these:

Thank you for the thread - I think I will do this.
If someone on the forum(s) does the TurnSmart installation, I'd appreciate a post on how hard the mod was and how satisfactory the result was....brightness, effectiveness of the wide angle mirrors, and ease of battery replacement. Thanks! 8)
