Hello All Priuscentis.

Do I have news for you all ! My specialty accessories aftermarket specialist the "Coach Automotive of Northern CA" has come up finally with the Super- Sunroof for the HSD Prius. ! At $1995.00 plus tax !

It has the roof curvature and all, looks fantastic it retracts, lifts up Glass MoonRoof with inner shade. .

Trying to take pics of the Roof and upload so you all can see.

This entity, the Coach Automotive, does all my
sumptuous leather conversion in any color and multi-colored such as two toned center perforation and heated seats.

as well as the regular Sunroofs for the Toyota line of vehicles.
The Prius took so long in developing the Roof due to the unusual shape of the Prius roof.

They have purchased a Prius to work on test benching the development of the Roof and finally the Sunroof is created. More news later on the price.

The ultra-slippery shape of the roof line is retained and should be no reduction on the CD of the original Prius.

Anyone can bring in their Prius and have it done ! The Coach Automotive is located in CA North !
===========================================

January, 15th 2006 ! Today finally took a bunch of Pics of the Sunroof installed on my "New" 04 Prius. Will attempt to upload them here tomorrow if I can figure how to post ? I have to go back and read the instruction sent from Mr, JDavies. DanMan32 and others...Thank you everyone !

The site only allows me to post a few Pics ! Please see the rest at the "Dealers" section _Under_ the Sunroof and Leathers.

To be honest, $1995 for sunroof (even if it is moonroof) is steep.
Therefore, it has to match the curve of Prius roof to match that cost!
Naturally, picture is needed.
Coach Automotive in Fremont?.. I sent them three emails for leather interior installation and quote. Not a single response. I wondered if they had closed. Apparently not. Not a big fan of their business practice.

$2K for a friggin, moonroof!?!?! You gotta be kidding me.

I have had a moonroof on like my last 4 or 5 cars, plus our other current
car besides the Prius has one, for the amount of time I use them, I wouldn't pay $300 for the moonroof on the Prius. For most of us, I would imagine a moonroof is one of those things that sounds better than it is. We like the idea of it, but we don't actually use it very much. At least not since I was like 20 yrs old.

Opinion alert!

I suppose I'm in the minority, however I just don't see the logic to moon roofs or sun roofs. I've seen the mechanism for them a number of times and frankly it seems like a Rhub Goldberg to me. The motors, wiring, switches, track, and gearing when viewed in the buff don't give me a great deal of confidence in long term reliability. I'm not assuming that manufacturers aren't making them to be reliable, but I just don't trust them to work properly for the length of time I tend to keep cars. On top of the mechanism itself, there are the seals and drainage track that has to be added to the mechanism in order to deal with various weather conditions. How many stories of leaking sunroofs have I heard and the problem with weather stripping, but clogged drain track. Imagine how difficult it is to clean clogged drain track. That depends on how long the track is and how it is configured, but it could require as little as shoving a long pipe cleaner down it to removing the headliner to to the track to clean it out.

Anyway, if I want air running through my hair and the feeling of uncovered motoring, I'll opt for a convertible any day. There are lots of really nice convertibles being built now (Mustang, Beetle, and so forth) that would fill my fix of open air driving, if I had such a desire. Who knows, maybe in the future.

HI Ceric. You know why they did not respond ? The are wholeseller installer for CA dealers. They do not deal with Non-Dealer referred customers direct. They only do works if for instance: I tell them do this job for a client....or refer a customer to them direct coming from me...

Hi, Rickey:

I didn't intend to vent my anger of them at you.
It is nice to know that they don't deal with "little guy" like me. However, maybe you should tell them someday to respond to emails like mine with a one-liner,
"Sorry, we don't do retail installation".
That would have saved me two emails after the first one.

I have been to Fremont Toyota a couple times and have seen your commercials on Japanese-language TV channel. Maybe I will say hi to you someday when my Prius goes in for service.

On moonroof, I am not a big fan, either.
The one on my Bimmer broke twice within two years (under warranty, $2000 each on paper). Both times, the cable snapped (don't ask me). The tech said I used it too much (guity here. I popped it out 1 inch for venting in hot summer). Now, everytime I use it, I pray because my Bimmer is out of warranty now... :(

Actually, and I have had only factory installed sunroofs for a long long time. I have never had leakage. I have had friends and family with leakage, but to my recollection (and I could be wrong) they were all aftermarket installed units. On my 238,000 mile at trade in Camry, it had a factory installed sunroof, and it never leaked a drop -- ever. It was never serviced either, never had an issue. And while I rarely drove with it open, see previous post, I used it a lot during the summer. I would pop it up a little bit to keep the interior from building up too much heat.

I hardley ever drove with it open, 'cause I hated the wind noise it created for not much air flow. I would rather use the AC and get a nice reasonable temperature. In someways it is hotter with the moonroof open, because now you have the sun beating down on your head. Forget it if you are follically challenged.

For $2k, I just wouldn't install an aftermarket sunroof. Unless you know you will use it often.

But Ricky is in the business of selling cars and the sunroof is an off times request on most cars today. There are parts of the country where they are used for comfort continuously. The wind noise can usually be cancelled out by the use of a small air dam type spoiler.
Two grand in the aftermarket for one moulded for the Prius top is probably a fair price for this type of installation which if offered by the factory would be between $395 and five hundred dollars.
Folks requesting this obviously don't consider money spent for what they want in a hybrid is wasted.

I like the idea of a moon/sun roof but not at 2G. Plus, just yesterday I had to apply duct tape around the perimeter of my GF's sun roof on her 2003 Honda CRV. Warranty expired at 36,000 and the extended warranty probably will not cover it.
