Can you carry sea kayaks at 40 pounds each on a prius?

It's been a couple of years now but the first Prius I saw for real was parked beside me with two kayaks which I would have estimated to be around that weight (40lbs) sitting on a unique ( to me) airfilled roof rack. I waited until he came back to his car and in the course of my giving him the 3rd. degree he said he regularly travelled from Vancouver Island down the Pacific Northwest coastal highway and return with them up there and said he did not consider the hit on the MPG to be worth considering. The package looked pretty aerodynamic.

Rack Fit

Yakima has a roof mount rack option for models prior to 2004. The 2004 fit should come out in January '05. (I'm waiting on this one.)

Thule currently has a fit for the '04.

You should be able to accessorize either roof rack with a kayak holder.

kayaks on prius

My partner and I are getting an '05 Prius which we fully intend to use for carrying our two 55-60 lb sea kayaks. I haven't seen anyone carrying two, yet, but here's a series of posts about racks:

and photographs of a single sea kayak on a Prius, with no roof rack--just foam blocks and webbing through the windows:

Also, the Prius has very sturdy tie points underneath all four corners. Clearly, some Toyota engineer understands the need to carry loads on the roof.

Hi all... I have a 60lb. Wenonah canoe that will be a sometime fixture on the roof of my new Prius (I take delivery 11/3). I have no idea how yet... does anyone have any experience with a rack and/or canoe?
