New-Be to this forum. Be patient with me.
I'm not ragging on any one or even Toyota.

BUT, I also drive a 97 Toyota Avalon with 130,000 mi's. It also has tract. cont. However it can be deactivated by dash P.B.

I've had on many occasions, been in situations where I've needed to disable it to get to where I have to go.

Snow covered road going up hill: 1st pass resulted in "clutching mechanism" just not allowing car to move at all.
2d pass at hill (trac.=off) went up to point where speed began to decrease due to wheels spinning, kept wheels GENTLY spinning and made it over top.

Dry pavement attempting to pull out into heavy traffic: See an opening and try to accelerate out and make 90deg. turn. Front end feels like some kind of ratcheting / slipping going on. Result caught halfway into traffic. Same conditions with trac.= off car accelerates into traffic with no problems.

And yes, I've had Toyota dealer and a good local mechanic check it out.
Both say it's performing normally.

One thing it makes me do is be much more cautious in these situations.
Also I leave my Prius home and take the Avalon in bad driving. Trac. Cont. can't be disabled in the Prius.

Seems to me using traction control just is to dangerous.

Yes, this is normal, and no, you can't do anything about it. It is a built-in function of the PSD, done (I believe) to protect the MG from overspeed, not as a "feature" called traction control.

Some have found relief in better (stickier) tires.

I don't drive in snow, but turning tight on wet streets in SoCal triggers it when I'd rather it not.

Hmm, I've just tried out the Prius' TRAC system again today. It was snowing and there was some packed snow and some slush here on the west coast.

I've noticed that the TRAC acted differently from last year. This time, it did what I expected a TCS to do - let the wheel spin a bit, then stop it, then let it go, then stop it if it spins again.

Last year, all it did was cut power and that's it, you're stuck. I'm curious as to these two different methods and what determines which method to be used?

I really dobt power was completely cut. Human interpretation and reaction to events can often cause more of an issue than help it. If trac kicks in, back off some on the throttle, but not completely. If you weren't accelerating wildly, then maintain throttle pressure. Trac may keep kicking in, but it has to kick out in order to sense that the situation remains. After all, if the wheels aren't spinning at all, how can it know there's a total traction loss?

Now there is a simple way to disable VSC, that might disable trac also, but I doubt it. You can also put the car in inspection mode which means no trac. It also means limited accelerator control.

Traction Control is standard on all US Prius. Not an option that can be skipped.


..................Sorry, I always get it confused with the VSC which was only offered in options #7 and #9 on th 04's. (at least in my dealers Pac)
As far as the manual there is no mention of either except for a description of the idiot light warnings, that I was able to locate. (could be in there, but not in the index and after five minutes of random looking in the expected spots I gave up.)

Oh, when I meant cut, I mean jabbing on the accelerator produced no wheel spin or forward momentum whatsoever. I really meant the power was cut :shock:

Agreed, the owner's manual is skimpy on the details. Relevent pages thought are 140-141 and 210.



....That was all I could find and well hidden it is. There is a full page about the VSC in the dealers pak I got on "E" bay and evidentually it was info for a salesman to be used in his pitch to sell "options" available on the Prius but the salesman I delt with had to ask for help to get my car started when I picked it up
