I'm on a short (5 ahead of me) waiting list for the 2004 Prius, but want to start doing my "homework" now in anticipation of its arrival. Where can I buy an owner's manual. ( I know, I'll be getting one free in a couple of months, but I can't wait til then to start learning more about the car in detail)

Go to your favorite Toyota parts source (closest may be your dealer), and order the Owner's Manual. Should be ~$16.

Or, call Toyota Publications, 800-622-2033 (7am-5pm PST).

Or, if you have a credit card with a US billing address, and a decently fast internet connection, download as much Toyota/Lexus info as you can in 24 hrs for $10: http://techinfo.toyota.com/

Don't waste your money! There is so little real information in the owner's manual that it's nearly pointless.

Instead, download john1701a's Prius Guide:

John's guide has much more information, and will give you some fun reading while you wait for your new prius.
