What flips the switch on this light?

I'm driving a 2005 with 8000 miles, no maintenence yet but I've changed the oil twice myself.

My gut says this is nothing, the car is acting fine, but I am traveling for the holidays and wondering if anyone knows?

Maintenance light

Here is a cheat sheet I made of some functions:

Eliminate reverse gear beep:
Power on.
Within 6 seconds press and hold “ODO” for 10 seconds.
While holding ODO, shift from P to R, then back to P.
Release ODO
Trip display will be “b on” or “b off.”
Press ODO to toggle.
Power off.

Reset 4500 mile oil change maintenance light:
4500 miles “Maint” flashes
5000 miles “Maint” stays on
Hold down ODO
Power on, and continue to hold down ODO.
Reminder light will flash until reset is complete.

Set door unlock configuration:
Hold down “Lock” on keyfob, then hold “alarm” until beep.
Repeat to cycle:
1) Driver door only (default)
2) All doors
3) Single door

Defeat Nav Lock while driving:
Go to volume screen from “Menu”
Tap top left (speaker), lower left, top left, lower left
Hold down “override” button until beep

Diagnostic Screen:
Start car.
Hold “INFO” button and operate light control switch: off, park, off, park, off, park, off
The diagnostic mode starts and the service check screen will be displayed.
Service inspection starts automatically, and will display results after a short pause.
Press “MENU” to see the menu.
Hold down “DISPLAY” for three seconds to exit.

You didn't post your location, so I don't know where you are, but Canada doesn't have the Maint Req. indicator.

In USA, Maint Req will blink a few times on startup after you reach 4500 miles from last reset, and will be steady on at 5000 miles from last reset, as Chris posted. Also Chris posted the reset procedure.

Very cool! I knew some of those, but the last one is new to me. Now, I'll print it out, and keep it in the car.
Keen.

If you do it again, you get to a different diagnostic screen.

Alternate means to get to the first diagnostic screen:
Press Display
Then touch upper left bottom left just below/above the display banner 3 times much like you do for the speed defeat.

In response to the original question, it probably thinks it is due for an oil change, based on mileage.

I had an oil change at 3100 miles just to have my first service completed after 4 months. The maintenance light was supposed to be adjusted to account for this early service (and I was told it was), but at 4900 miles I saw the flashing light come on at startup. I had already decided to take it in at 5000 as winter was here, and I'd be back on a normal schedule. Flashing light is gone.

Unlocking the Nav functions while driving worked fine, but next time driving, was locked again. Is there anyway to permanently unlock the nav while driving?

Thanks,

John

Coastal claims to have a mod, but has not delivered in over a year. Therefore, no mod there.

Yes, many have added a switch to disconnect the purple speed wire both to the MFD and to the NAV. There are side-effects in doing so.
For NAV, eventually it realizes by GPS that you are indeed moving, therefore resumes the lockout. Your location on the map might be a bit incorrect until it re-orients itself.
For MFD, the wheels won't turn on the energy screen, and the 5 minute MPG averages won't show. Your tank MPG and miles driven is obtained from the odometer throught the networks, so there won't be problems there.
