I'm at 5000 miles on my 2005 prius. the dealer called me to sehcdule an oil change and said it would cost $89.95. Is this right? Seems like alot to me.

Miller Toyota on Washington Blvd in Culver City

I read in anpother post thaat someone paid $25.00 for a change...

Run away!! I cannot think that's even close to right for an oil change!

Rancho Santa Margarita Toyota wanted $29.99 for the oil change and $19.99 for the rotation. I thought that was high!

I ended up doing it myself - at least I know it's done right and the oil level is correct.

It also brought me and the Prius closer together. Draining the fluids of the ones you love is the best thing you can do in any relationship.

thanks for the advice! I'm too busy to do the work myself, Does anyone know of a dealer on the west side of Los Angeles, who IS trustworthy ??

Can't I just take it to the jiffylube, anyway?

Is Sanny really Morticia? Enquiring dugongs want to know...

Yes you can take it to Jiffy Lube. My dealer charges $65.00 for the 5k service, but offerred it free for stopping by one evening and eating free food while they introduced the service department. I also got a hat, a tote bag, a coffee mug and a Sponge Bob air freshener.

Anyone need a Sponge Bob air freshener?

Why would you want an air freshener in any car. I mean, mine still smells new, like plastic and artificial fibers.

da 5000 mile checkup

OK, here's my take so far on dealers on the west side of L.A.

Marina Del Rey Toyota - stay away - slimy - I've talked to numerous people who have had bad experiences with them. They charge over MSRP for new models.

Miller toyota, Culver City - my dealer - bought my prius from them. Pretty straight forward, though a bit expensive on the service side as it turns out.

Anyone been to other dealers in the area and want to chime in?

Also bought mine from Miller. I take it there for service because I get "free oil changes" with the "Miller Edge" card they gave me due to an arrangement with my local employer. When I go in for service, I specify that I only want the factory-recommended service items. The $90 they want to charge you is for a full stem-to-stern inspection by their Prius-specialist mechanic. Of course, if your experience is like mine, that same "specialist" will put 10W oil in it, instead of 5W like he's supposed to.

When you decline all the extra padding, they put "CUSTOMER DECLINED RECOMMENDED SERVICE", or something to that effect on the ticket, I guess to scare you into thinking you're voiding your warranty. As long as I DO have 'em do everything the manual recommends, I think I'm safe there.

When I went for my 10k, I had a testy convo with the service mgr. He said that their Prius services are more expensive than for other Toyotas because their Prius mechanic is specially trained, and so their costs are higher. I responded that if he's specially trained, then howcum he doesn't know what kind of oil to put in the damn thing. My next service was free, with synthetic oil to boot. hee.
