Just got a 2001 today.
Love the car.
I was wondering if it would be fair to say that the mpg rating only gives
part of the fuel economy story.
I am currently getting 5.3 litres for 100km which is about half what i got
with my last car.
But i guess there is some extra savings when sitting and idling that are
not calculated.
I hope that makes sense, sorry about the metric stuff.

Thanks

I guess it is fair to say that. Afterall, put 10ltrs in a tank and sit there idle all the time you use a lot of fuel to go nowhere.

But even if it was ltrs/minute, that would also not be accurate. You need to also specify RPM, motor loading etc.

:?
I guess you mean your old car used 10.6ltrs/100km not 2.6ltr/100km

The time spent sitting is already included in the calculation, if you are comparing two cars over the same route with the same amount of time sitting still. That's because the gas the conventional car burns during this time is included in the overall calculation of fuel efficiency. Shutting off the engine is one way the Prius manages to burn less gas.

So, no, there is no "extra" savings beyond what you have calculated.
