Well.. I just got back from my test drive.. .I've now driven an 06 Ford Escape Hybrid, an 05 and an 03 Prius...
This is how they stack up in my books..
#1 -FEH ... drove wonderfully. Looks and feels like a "normal car" . AWD which is a huge plus. Leather interior
#2 - 03 Prius ... This car was very nice. I liked the trunk and the the car handled and performed well. I didnt like the bizarro stickshift and the annoying computer screen, but I did manage to turn them off.
#3 05 Prius.. I must say that I am disappointed. AAfter all of the hype over this car, I expected more. It was overly "gadgety". Toyota.. listen up and install a normal dashboard. Leather seats not an option. I'm tall and my head hit the roof and the visor intersected my field of vision. The rearward view was bisected by the mullion for the hatch. Handling and power were fine, but nothing to rave at over the other two vehicles.
Well.. it's amazing what a test drive can do for you. Needless to say that the 05 or newer Prius wont be on the books for a purchase.
I would suggest that anyone interested in buying any of these cars insist on a test drive. Drive them all and do it within a few days of each other so your imperssions are fresh in your mind.
Some people might be attracted to gadgets and things, but I'm not.

Well, I sure admire Fish_Antler's thoroughness and open-mindedness as he researched his car. Truth is, wouldn't mind a FEH to replace my CRV (Isabelle's cousin), but mine is pretty much new, and about 10K cheaper...still, I'm jealous.
well.. deal isnt done yet.. now the shopping begins in ernest. Basically dealers claimed that the 05 FEH is sold out... so I "have" to buy an 06.. BUT dealer I spoke with yesterday told me that there were lots of 05's to choose from and that he could get one in for me... on top of that there is $4800 (cdn) off on remaining 05's and 4.9% financing..

06 Prius models get leather as an option if you didn't know already. I don't see the problem with the dash since the Classic has it in the centre while the 04+ models have it closer to the line of sight. Either way, the point is you tested the models you wanted.

Well, all I can say is that I asked about this specifically. No leather for 06. Strangely he told me that he was taking pre-orders with a 3 month wait and that was on 05 models. Can that be true?
If you are going to have to wait for the Ford Escape Hybrid, you may want to wait (or put your name on a list) for the new Mercury Mariner Hybrid. (it's the sister to the Escape.) True but he said they were taking orders for a 3 month wait on an 05 which is ridiculous.
When I ordered my car, all I did was go to the dealership, talk to the salesman with whom I wanted to buy the car, sat down and let him fill out that usual sheet. Because of Access Toyota, there's no bargaining so all the salesman does is go to Toyota Canada's website and show you the price that you're gonna pay. He then asked us for a deposit of any amount over $50 and then sends that sheet of paper off to Toyota Canada who then ordered the car for us. We ordered it on the 15th Sept 04 and it arrived on 25th Oct 04.
It's a slightly different ordering system than the States. You order the car you want and it gets built for you. It seems like the States' ordering system is, place your order and the first one that comes in with your specs and colour is yours.

actually funny thing was that the used prius they let me drive was pretty beat. scratches everywhere.. interior was filthy. Salesman kept say how the "title was clean" over and over.. he wouldnt answer when I would ask him if it was one owner etc etc.. . he's just say it's "clean" ... so when he went inside to get teh dealer plate I opened the glove box, and low and behold! "Thrifty Rental Car" dashcard and insurance and registration.

Just got off the phone with vehicle registry... apparently it's against the law (here) to not declare that a car was used as a rental... so that car ISNT "clean title"..

Well, it actually is a clean title. Being a rental doesn't make it unclean, but apparently still has to be declared. Now a SALVAGE vehicle is not a clean title.
But I don't understand why you are comparing an SUV to a compact and a midsize car. Next you'll be saying you expect 50 MPG from the FEH. Not gonna happen, vehicle was designed for more power to accomplish its intended tasks.
That's not to say it isn't a good vehicle, just different than a Prius, HCH, HAH, etc.

first off where I live you have to declare the following:
ex police car, taxi, rental or accitdent over $2K.
Any of those being declared makes it "not clean title". This info stays on the DMV file forever.
second point... as I mentioned before I dont give a rats ass about FE. ... The Escape simply drove better and wasnt "trying" to be gadgety and gimmicky like the prius...
.. plus if you visit the FEH forum you'll find several people getting 60mpg + from FEH... if you were interrested in trying to achieve that.
My accelerator pedal is usually to the floor so trying to gingerly dance around town to see if I can squeeze a few more mpg isnt my cup of tea.
