Anybody else noticing this post-Katrina phenomenon? As our Prius went from 2900 miles to 5875 miles, the lifetime mpg based on the pump and the lifetime mpg based on the MFD never varied much: The pump calculation was consistently between 2.0 and 2.2 mpg lower. But starting in September, the two figures began to diverge. The current disparity is 2.46 mpg, which doesn't sound like much more, but it means the disparity over the last 1397 miles has been 3.8 mpg (53.31 pump versus 57.14 MFD).

Since the car hasn't been in for any service, the most plausible conclusion is that I've filled up at some crooked gas stations. (Since I have no regular commute, I don't regularly fill up anywhere in particular.) This could be nothing more than bad luck. But with gas prices so high - in Colorado Springs, still above pre-Katrina levels, which were already about 20 percent higher than a year ago - there's more incentive than ever for gas stations to fudge a little.

Any other drivers have experiencing this?

Suggest you find a station close to home and use it principly for a couple of tankfulls. Too bad about Colorado. Since our state attourney generals office announced they were going to start audits and checking price gouging our prices have been dropping about 6 cents a week. Locally now $2.25 with one Metropolitan station making the evening news with $1.99 for regular.
Business section of the paper today says that all refineries are back up to pre Katrina figures of production. Prices are still high and the oil companies have now got the "bit" in their teeth. Someone should let the "west-wing" know the price of gas.

I'm also amazed that since our attorney general announced an investigation into price gouging by some stations in addition to the high profits of the major companies, our gas price has dropped to about $2.49 a gallon. It's dropped up to $1.50 a gallon around here over the past few weeks.

Thankfully, the price of gas is steadily dropping here, too. Thank goodness, since quite a few stations around the theme parks and airport were hitting $3.30/ gal. Still, it's not as bad as Europe...Aprrox. $5/ litre...

(shudder)

Back to the matter at post, last fall the difference was around 2.2. Then last spring it went down to about 1.2. Now it is climbing again to 1.8.

I choose to accept the MFD without question, until the day when I run out of gas before 10x the current MPG reading has gone by and I know I had filled the tank. THEN, I'll worry about accuracy...
