I apologize if this has been asked before, but if I purchase a Prius after 1/1/06, does anyone know how to know for certain I've purchased one of the first 60,000 vehicles? Has Toyota announced some kind of registration process?

There won't be that many sold for some time. The total number of ALL hybrids by all manufactures and models was 83,153 in 2004.

Even with the anticipated increase in 2006 hybrid sales it should take at least through April to reach 60,000.

Maybe I'm just being hard-headed, but I still don't get it. :?
If you buy a Prius in June of 2006,
how do you know whether its the 59,999 one or the 60,001 one. The 60,001 one sold misses the tax credit!

Whenever the 60,000th Hybrid is sold, then you have through the next quarter to get the full credit.

For example, if the 60,000th vehicle is sold on July 7, then you have till the end of December to get the full credit. After that, the credit starts incrementally dwindling.

The only question is when that magic number will be reached.

"The next tax credit sets a limit of 60,000 hybrids per carmaker. After hitting that mark, the credits for those hybrids will phase out over a 15-month period."

There's also instructions and link to IRS on how to actually claim it. btw, the Prius is gets the most credit - $3150.

If you read the tax code, it states the credit starts phasing out the quarter after the quarter where 60K is hit.

So really there are only 4 dates you have to concern yourself with: The first (or last, depending on perspective) day of a calendar quarter. I am sure the news and the manufacturers would inform the public which dates apply to which manufacturers.

Now the other question might arise, does the Lexus hybrid count against Toyota?
