People have been predicting the demise of the Insight for years now. I'll believe it when I see it. (Considering how low the sales volume is, I wouldn't be surprised...)

Just remember that the US CAFE is a fleet average. The MPG from the EPA tests (the MPG before they apply the downward multiplier for the numbers posted on the window stickers) is taken and weighted with the sales volume of each vehicle in the USA fleet in each size category (passenger vehicles and light trucks (pickups, SUVs, minivans, etc.).

Odd, I always thought CAFE was based not on the actual sales of any vehicle, but the average as if the exact same number of each vehicle were produced. (So if all a company produced was a 70 MPG hybrid, of which they sold 100, and a 15 MPG SUV that they sold 10,000 of, the 'actual' average MPG would be 15.5, but what I thought the 'CAFE' average would have been 42.5 [(70+15)/2 instead of ((15*10,000)+(70*100))/10,100.] If it's the way you describe, then that's a lot better than what I had thought. (Which is why I thought the Insight was still around, because it would disproportionately skew the results.)

interesting charts; some observations:

I noticed that the 'Asian' group hovered at 31mpg, domestics improved to 29mpg, and surprising to me, the 'Euros' actually declined to average about 27mpg. But closer look shows that the mpg 'high' for European cars was during the diesel import years of early to mid 1980s (the only years that I owned a diesel), and then the mpg fall off occurred when the mix went nearly all gasoline; leaving out the diesel, the Euros stayed pretty much at 25mpg.
