Has anyone ever added or programmed remote transmitter?

Hi All,
I recently bought a used Prius. Love it! It was missing both remotes. I got replacements (retail $158 ea; ouch!), however the dealer wants $75 more for programming. I would like to do it myself. I have tried the method that I found on http://www.coastaletech.com, but no luck yet. Am I a moron? What's the trick? Open door, close door, turn key-in-out ? Was Toyota nuts? Anybody care to comment? Thanks. Love the web based support.

I've done it, and it worked OK.

First thing to check is whether you are using the correct procedure. The CoastalETech website has instructions for programming transponder keys, and a different set of instructions for programming remote door lock controllers. You won't get very far if you're using the wrong instructions.

Next possibility - it's possible to fill up the remote door lock receiver (four remote controllers maximum). I suggest that you use the erase-all-controllers procedure to get those missing remotes out of the memory (just in case someone tries to use them to grab some of your stuff). Then add in the new remote controllers.

Last possibility - you need to run through the steps of the procedure reasonably quickly. There's no need to go at it in a mad rush, but you can't wait about either.

Good luck.

Regards,
Julian.
Use the method outlined in shop manual

Greetings All,
I have been made aware that there are some subtle problems with the method outlined on the Coastaletech website. I have now programmed my new remotes via the method outlined in the factory shop manual. It worked great, however the method is a little complicated. Thanks to everyone who looked at the post.
Happy motoring!

Good to know. It would be real helpful if you could scan the page from the shop manual and post it as an attachment here. Also I am sure that Coastal would love to know if their instructions were unclear.

Try Remotes Unlimited

If you call their tech-support number, they are very helpful. They also sell programming instruction manuals.
