Handling in Bad Weather

Just finished driving 200+ miles in upstate NY through what was supposed to be a few flurries from watertown to binghamton... The actual weather was whiteout conditions most of the way, lots of snow and ice on the road. I am pleased to report that the prius handled excellent, I had no problems speeding up, slowing down or anything else while watching the SUV's with their 4wd sliding off the road :) I was able to feel both traction control and ABS activating at various times in the trip and while it was scary (especially when a SUV almost lost control in front of me) I had no problems maintaining lane control.

You didn't really mean whiteout conditions. You wouldn't see those SUVs at all in a real whiteout. I traversed across a good part of Antarctica a few years back, and saw some real whiteout conditions - you couldn't see 3 feet in front of you. In Antarctica you can keep plowing ahead since there is nothing to run into (on the plateau anyway), in urban America, just pull over and wait.

only a few times with a real whiteout when the wind was blowing, other than that visibility was about 20 feet and it was very slippery, diden't have much choice than to keep on going. If I knew before the trip about the weather (the weather people said few lake effect flurries) I would have waited until today to leave

Ditto on the handling. I did have one close call on a black ice situation where my rear right tire got caught on the side of the pavement (where there is a 3 inch drop to gravel), and it through me and my pri for a 180 degree spin in my lane . Luck was on my side and I stayed in my lane and had no contact, but I sure was awoken..

I also was introduced to the traction control going up a steep country lane with about 6 inches of unplowed snow on it. I had the gas floored and the computer said - what the heck are you doing? It creeped up the hill - even with the OE potenzias. The computer says it knows better..
