I brought my car in for service today... no real problems, however they did put in 10w30 and told me something about toyota reccomending that for this service area. Does anyone know anything about toyota reccomending anything other than the 5w30 in southern NY (around binghamton?) other than that they rotated my tires and set them back to the reccomended tire pressure :( diden't even have to remind them that it was allready payed for.

I sure would raise "H" about the 10w 30 oil. That is way to heavy for cold weather like you experience in New York State and furthermore the Prius Engine does not run all the time, so it never gets as hot as a normal ICE car. I only have 4200 miles on my 2002 but I am thinking about taking my own oil (Mobil 1 5W30) along in when I get first service at 5,000 miles. I believe John in Minnesota has mentioned Mobil 1 (0W30) which I never have heard of. but it sounds good to me for that extremely cold weather up there. Just remember, the lighter the oil, the better the mileage!

I know that my dealer will move to 10-30 for the spring and summer months for all toyotas. The 2001 owners manual states that the 5w30 is preferred for all temperature ranges, but 10w-30 is allowed from 0degrees farenheit on up.

Perhaps talking to the dealer in advance and showing them the owners manual, would also help..

good luck.

yes-I will ask for 5-30 next visit (in about 1 month).

Jeff,
They only used 10w30 because it is cheaper bulk oil. Complain, they used the wrong oil! Make them change it!!! (free) many others have done so. If they can't be trusted to use the proper oil can you be sure that they even rotated the tires?
