We recently had the 25,000 service done on our 04 Prius. Driving home that evening we noticed a "helicopter" thod coming from the front tire. We dropped the car off at the dealer the next day to have them look at it. They said that the tire was feathered and switched it to the rear of the car.

Since then, we have been pricing replacing the stock tires with Michelin HydroEdges. In doing so one tire dealer said that they have another Prius customer who had the same type of feathering issue. The dealer inspected the car and found that the rear toe in was off. They fixed the toe in and replaced the tire. This customer is on his/her third tire and the feathering just keeps on coming back.

Anyone else experiencing the same type of problem?

Thanks,
The Millers

Feathering describes a sawtooth effect when the tire is looked at from the front or rear. It is often caused by incorrect toe-in. Aggressive cornering can contribute also.

Noise is usually from an out of round rim (more common with steel rims), or cupping from an out of balance wheel.

In either case, a thorough alignment, with (1) toe-in, even though the spec allows zero toe, and (2) good side-to-side matching. Get a printed report so you know the before and after of all readings.
