We just got delivery of a 2006 Prius. The dealer "offered" an extended service plan (7 years; 100,000 miles) for around $2150. Then after discovering that we are members of Costco, the price was lowered to $1200. Does anyone have a feeling as to the wisdom of extending the warranty from 3 years to 7 years for $1200?

my personal opinion is that it is a waste of money
you also didn't mention if it was a Toyota backed extended warranty or one from an outside vendor
just because your dealer is offering at the time of sale, doesn't make it the Toyota one
I think it is a waste either way, but really a waste if it isn't the Toyota one
how much profit must they make if they can nearly halve the price at the drop of a hat?

West coast dealers that were charging from three to five thousand dollars over MSRP for their cars last year were also asking from 2 to 3 thousand for the Toyota Platinum warranties which were offered by mid west and east coast dealers for $875 to $985.
Warranties are a personal thing and in 60 years I have never purchased one until now. I wouldn't have even thought of purchasing a Prius without one. (my dealer suggested it and sold me the 7 yr, 100,000 mile for $875)
It is transferable and will be a great option to pass on to the next owner of my car.

The question posed is a good one. (I hear) some Toyota dealers are selling this extended warranty for less than $1000. For that I'd buy it just for piece of mind. My dealer offered it for $1650 at time of sale but put no pressure on me. I've got about 7 months before the 3/36 runs out. I keep hearing about MFD's failing for $2500-$3000 replacement costs.Spike said:

Since the OP is in WA, there's no concern about getting a Southeast Toyota region 3rd-party extended warranty rebranded as the official Toyota extended warranty... You should be able to get the Toyota Extra Care plans backed by Toyota Financial Services (owned by Toyota).

The wisdom in an extended warranty is really more of an issue of your comfort level with this technology and if you will feel better having a warranty or not. An extended warranty is a gamble. In most instances you will end up being the looser because the car probably will not have any issues between now and the time the extended expires. However you could break even on it if anything were to fail inside the time and mileage window of the warranty.
However, for the prices that the dealer working with PriusChat is offering, I don't think it is such a bad idea to get one. You have from now until you reach 3 years of ownership or 36,000 miles to purchase one from Toyota.
Actually, it's in my list of suggested dealers on the VFAQ site. It's the purchaser's choice if they want to go through PriusChat or if they want to go direct with Troy at Toyota of Greenfield (MA), or if they want to go with a different dealer altogether.jeromep said:

I actually did get my extended from my dealer, however I brought in the numbers from VFAQ and Priuschat and got a very competitive price from my dealer at purchase. It was worth it to me to pay a very little more and get it at purchase rather than have to do it outside of purchase at a later date.
Since the dealer was willing to deal with me on the price of the extended, I figured I'd give them the business. Plus they discounted my interest rate on the loan from Toyota by .55 because I gave them the warranty business. I think it worked out in my favor.
