I was in negotiations with several dealers the past two weeks for the purchase of my Prius. Try this line from one sales manager: If you don't buy this car here, and you bring it here for warranty work or maintenance, you will go to the end of the line in the service department.

I stuffed the papers back in my folder, stood up, told him I didn't cotton to threats, and walked out. The owner called me an hour later and apologized.

Wow, that's really unbelievable. You did the right thing by walking away. When the owner called did he mention if that salesman still worked for him? If I were the dealership owner I would be wondering how much business this guy lost for me.

I had a bad experience with my purchase as well. Initially it was a cakewalk. I showed up with the Edmunds TMV quote for my area and told the salesman that is all I was willing to pay for the '07 Touring Edition. After a little hemming and hawing with the manager they capitulated. Next I was sent to the back room to meet with Jim the finance guy. Not a big deal I thought since I was paying cash. Well, Jim preceded to spend the next hour trying to sell me a bunch of aftermarket stuff like extended warranty, rust proofing, glass etching, Lo jack etc. He was trying to convince me that the Prius was a high theft vehicle, that it had no factory installed alarm system and that it could easily be hotwired. Normally I would have walked away instantly but two things held me back: 1) I was feeling a little vulnerable since I had my previous car stolen out of my driveway the week before ('95 Acura Integra) and 2) they had the only red Touring edition in a 200 mile radius which is exactly what I was looking for (of course I didn't tell them that). He actually uttered the following phrase several times "I couldn't give my brother a better deal on these products." Finally I had enough and I said either I'm paying for this car right now or I'm going to another dealer.

In the end I got the car I wanted at the price I wanted but I will never go back to that dealership for service. Fortunately here in the San Diego area we have plenty of dealers to choose from.

So you dealt with two Jimmys: Jimmy "the closer" and Jimmy the Finance guy. The Closer normally wants to close the vehicle purchase deal, the finance wants to offer you other accessories and or other services. If the two Jimmys were pushing you to buy the "alarm"
then the sale item of the day ( bonus ) was the alarm. Glad you got the Red Touring, Nice Prius version and also the color.

Rickey, I think you are referring to my post on the Q&A forum also written yesterday concerning my buying experience: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=11959. On that post, telling essentially the same story I used the term closer rather than finance guy. I am sorry for being imprecise. I guess Jim was the finance guy based on your definition. No closer was necessary for my deal since we (the dealership and myself) reached a mutually agreeable selling price quickly.

As I said in my other post not all salesman are sleazy (and as I also said in my other post I certainly don't put you in that category) but there are enough around to warrant caution on the part of a buyer. Which brings up the question: why are there sleazy salesman out there? Because the sleaze tactic must work often enough to make it profitable. I can do my part in dissuading this behavior by telling other potential buyers to look elsewhere.

If I had dealt with a different finance guy (say one that was forthright and explained why a 3rd party alarm system might have been an added benefit onto an already safe car rather than trying to scare me into a sale) I might not have left the dealership with a bitter taste in my mouth. But given the experience I did have at that dealership I don't plan on going back. Instead I take my car to Kearny Mesa Toyota (also in San Diego) where I feel valued as a customer. They may cost a little more for their services but the money is worth it for peace of mind. I am very happy with my Prius and plan on driving it for many years!

Yes, they've tried this on me as well. I pointed out to the moron that the sales dept. and service dept. were considered separate entities in the dealership. Sales wouldn't even know when I was in service! I also pointed out there were other dealerships in town I could take my business to if they liked! THAT shut him up!

I would have responded "fine, I won't buy it here, and I won't get it serviced here, either."

I understand now, You can report this incident to Toyota regional. Toyota comdones this kind of practice in its policy, = Such statement as: If you don't buy it here you go to the back of service line is absurd. Such attitude and behaviour from this dealer warrants for you to write to Toyota regional. It _does_ not matter where a customer buys this vehicle, the service has to honour your maintaining your Prius.

Simply put, that is pretty amazing. I've heard some sleazy lines from dealers and even sales managers, but I think this one takes the cake. I've heard the reverse, "buy the car from us and we'll be sure you get great service when you come in," but not the reverse, like this one.

I was fortunate. After spending $72+ filling up my Yukon I went to the local Toyota dealership on Monday and told them what I wanted (Driftwood PKG# 5); It was delivered Tuesday and I drove it off the lot Wednesday. The salesman was great. I will get my service there for sure ...

when i didnt buy the service plans from the dealer the finance guy got all mad and made me sign some stupid waiver saying if my car broke down
i would not get a rental car or something, i never have been back at that car delaer and take all my warranty work or maintaince coupons to
other dealers.

i suspected strongly that i had 3 years and 36,000 miles to purchase it, i did not know what the current deals were for it, and found out
later the same day after i picked up the prius and glad i saved the 2,800 they wanted for a $50 deductible
