Dear All,

The off-side rear door of my 2006 Prius will not open either from the inside or the outside. The remote fob locks and unlocks all of the other doors but makes no difference to the rear door. The door handles move both inside and out but the lock knob on the inside feels like it has a very strong spring preventing it from moving to the unlock position. Because the door won't open I can't remove the door trim to sort out the problem, the rear seat and wheel arch stops me from getting access to all of the trim. The only thing I can think of is to chop out the door trim, unlock the door and then replace whatever is faulty plus a new door trim. Does anyone have a better solution or experience of this problem.
Your suggestions and guidance are much appreciated.
Regards

Had the same problem. Here's what I did. I was able to get the door panel loose by lifting it ...or "prying" it from the top. There's that piece of plastic that runs along the top of the panel, and it's kind of flexible and will allow you to pop the door panel loose if you lift up and out. Once you have the panel loose you will have a little bit of space to poke around down there to free up the lock. I was able to then open the door from the outside, but still couldn't open it from the inside. I probably need a new actuator, but the actuator is covered with this hard shell that doesn't seem to have anyway of removing it except cutting or prying it off, which then presents the problem of how do you put it back on?

Hello, very nice to have you. I am sorry to learn of your issue with the Prius' rear door. Despite the fact that it sounds like a frustrating situation, I'm glad you sought assistance. Have you tried unlocking the door from the outside using the manual key? The lock mechanism might simply be jammed or stuck, and unlocking it manually might help. To better examine the issue, you may need to remove the door panel if that fails. Although it is more difficult, it is preferable to remove the trim. You might also want to think about taking your car to a reputable mechanic or dealership for a professional repair and diagnosis. Have fun.

Thanks for the feedback. I did try unlocking the door from the outside ...using the key on the front driver's side door since there's no key slot on the rear doors, and I did take the door panel off and checked all the cables, etc., and everything seemed to be properly connected. Put the panel back on and was about to call my local "rip-off" dealership, when I decided to try fiddling with the child lock on the inside of the door. I had tried clicking that back and forth prior to this, and it didn't help, but this time, for whatever reason, it somehow fixed the problem. Now I'm just hoping it doesn't re-occur.
