There are .26417 US gallons per liter. A liter is just about 1 quart.

Perhaps you meant the other way around: 3.78541 Liters per US gallon.
If you did your calculation as you said, you nearly quadrupled the true result.

Soryy, my mistake, of course it is the other way round.

Anyway, I think the diesel question has already been resolved:

As the debate continues over which alternative fuel technology is the most effective, Toyota is hard at work on combining two of the frontrunners. "Informed sources" told Japan's Kyodo News this week that the automaker will deliver a diesel hybrid compact car as early as 2010. The car will be built in cooperation with Isuzu.
