Dashboard Display Faded Out

I have 63000 miles on my 2001 model. Just a few days ago the dashboard display appeared to shut off. All I get is a really faded out version of my displays showing through very, very weakly. I know how to turn the display off and back on. Tried all that, plus, as best as I could with the really faded intensity, resetting contrast and brightness, but no luck. The back light works OK when the headlights go on, but it appears there's some other kind of light that needs to be working in order to project the text and figures brightly.

Any ideas? Anyone with similar experience?
