I work for a newspaper laying out ads and one of our clients is advertising a 2001 Prius as having "Hybrid Synergy Drive". Is this correct or did HSD start with the 2nd gen. Prius--2004?
It's the same concept. The actual name is THS: Toyota Hybrid System, with the current version being THS-II. Toyota changed the market name to Hybrid Synergy Drive: HSD probably because they were licensing some of the technology and wanted to keep the concept brand neutral.
So for marketing purposes, HSD for the classic may not be correct, but from a technological standpoint, is OK.
