Greetings all, I have been lurking for a month or so and love to read and gather information from all of your experiences. I am on a waiting list for the 2005 #3 package due in Feb plus or minus. I have already bought the service manuals, being a nerdly kind of guy. Today my cousin calls and tells me he has a 2004 Prius with package #9 for $25K. He says its in
perfect condition with 8600 miles on it. I trust him he is a good guy and knows vehicles. What do you think, used or new? Is the tax break we get a tax credit or and income credit? Thanks for all your help... I rented a 2004 last weekend and put 400 miles on her. On the North Coast of California 51 plus miles per gallon. Anyone that knows these roads will
appreciate that mileage and I wasn’t babying her. I am so excited....

That's a very fair price, considering the market, for the '04 and you'll love the bells and whistles your #3 won't have. But there's something special about having a brand new car too.

I say it's totally your call.

Evan,
Thanks for the reply. I know I'm on the fence. Can I live without the new car smell........ a question to be pondered.

The US federal Clean Fueled Vehicle
tax DEDUCTION is only applicable to
purchasers of NEW Prius, not lessors,
not used Prius.

http://www.toyota.com/vehicles/2005/prius/tax.html

Information on how to file can be
found in IRS Publication 535 "Business Expenses,"
Chapter 12.

The full $2000 deduction amount has
been reinstated for tax years 2004
and 2005. That amount is taken off
of your taxable income (not the
amount of taxes owed), so the amount
the deduction is worth to you depends
on your income tax bracket.

Michelle,
Great information. I knew the tax break was only available to new first owners, but I wasn't sure about value to me either way I go. Thanks.

chance at a 2004

Sounds like a fair price and as was pointed out it has all the bells an whistles you won't get with the #3 2005 package. Take it for a test drive. Have it checked out at a Toyota dealership and go for it!
