I am in the market for a bike rack for my 04 Prius. I would like to put one on that is not hitch mounted, doesn't scratch the paint, is easy to put on and take off, and is stable. Does anyone have one that they would recommend??? Thanks ahead.

Almost impossible.

I have a bike rack (Saris Bones) that fits without touching anything except the glass and the bumper. It's very light and strong, but takes some care and effort to fit it to the car without touching any paintwork (aside from the bumper) so it's hardly convenient. I'm planning on setting up a different carrier inside, so I can put two mountain bikes in the back with only the front wheel removed.

The carrier I have (and it's for sale, if you want it and you're in the SF Bay Area) is basically unusued. I bought it originally for an SUV, then tried it on a sports car, then it spent a year or two hanging in the garage. It works well enough on the Prius, with the advantage that the bike isn't on the roof (where it apparently really kills highway fuel efficiency) but the only real solution is probably a hitch, but I don't want to go that way.

There's consumer reviews of bike racks at http://www.mtbr.com/ and http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Bike_Rack/p ... 8464.shtml

Cheers,
