Hello all,
Just got my '04 Prius after a long wait. It's a green one with package #9.
I love the car but have 1 thing that keeps it from being perfect:

The sound system: Even with the upgraded JBL 9 speaker system it does not come close to a decent sound system.

Here are my observations:
- hollow sounds from the front speakers
- no base eventhough there is a subwoofer
- rear speakers sound terrible (too soft compared to front)
- no power in the system
- Cd's sound ok but nothing to write home about

For my questions:
- What are the alternatives, if any, at this point to change-out / enhance the audio system?
- Is there a way to add an aftermarket sub with powered amp?

I hope there are some options out there. Thanks is advance.

I'd have to agree that the sound system isn't what I expected. I have the standard system and it's better than my Escort was, but still not exciting.
I notice that there is too much base even with treble set to max and base to minimum, which makes talking voice hard to understand.
Small complaint, though, on an otherwise marvellous machine. I'll live with the sound system for the present since the problem seems to be in the speakers rather than the tuner/radio, and it would be pricey to replace the speakers.

It may not be pricey to replace the speakers. I plan to call my dealer to see if there are any bulletins on this problem (yes, I'm calling it a "problem", small though it may be). I may also call Crutchfield this week or next to find out if they have a better speaker kit.

The disadvantage in the Prius is that you can't swap the system for a after market system. Sure wish the Prius had standard din slots for the audio stuff. Have fun, RIck

You're right, Rick. But maybe the speakers can be replaced, as long as the replacement speakers have the same resistance.
