My friend from high school is pressed for time. He's got a research paper due by monday and he has to interview someone. His topic is on Ethanol and he probably doesn't need very much of anyone's time so if anyone could help i would be sooo thankful. Of course, hopefully you'd be an expert on Ethanol. If you're interested, I guess reply here or give me a PM

thanks!

Sorry to take so long the equation is simple. first take a planted acre of corn convert it to ethinol, then try to use the resulting ethanol only to bring back new seed. then use the remaining ethanol to plant the new corn. Then try to use the remainder to cultivate and weed the field, then use the remainder to bring in the harvest. Now use the remainder to truck the corn to the elevator, ok now we use the remainder to truck the corn to the distillery, now were close to the end... use the remainder to heat the mash so it can be distilled into new alcohol............ you may notice somewhere back along the way you ran out of alchol. thats ok try again,,, Heres a hint; YOU CAN'T DO IT!!!!! but hey prove me wrong. I've long since moved on to something more fun GRAVITY CONTROL, I messed up my back moveing all that corn and now can't stand. sit or sleep at all well in a 1 gee enviroment...

All good points. Enthanol is a political plum given to the farm community by politicians as a farm subsidy. It was supposed to reduce the amount of foreign oil that the country imports. However it's 10% use has been shown to drop milage by several MPG so that more gas has to be used with the mixture to get to the same point. So just about everyone agrees this is a zero savings in foreign oil imports.
Now, add the 10 % which is "mandated" in my state and forget about leaving the stuff in your boat, motorcycle, lawn mower, snowblower tanks or even a pick-up with dual tanks for any length of time cause the stuff has no shelf life even with "sta-bil" added and it gums up the works.
However the farmer is ecstatic cause he gets more cash for corn and grain for the distillation of enthanol that he has cut back on growing the stuff for human consumption and a fifty pound bag of flower has doubled in cost in the past two months. Bread has gone up a buck a loaf in the same time and people all over the world are now starving or waiting in food lines. I have no idea how "rice" has got into this act but read an article in this mornings paper that a shortage of this is occurring account of the production of enthanol and Sam's club is now limiting the number of bags of rice a customer can purchase.
It has been said that the exhaust from a gas mixture with 10% enthanol is "cleaner" (less contaminants in the atmosphere) but this is conteracted by the more required to go the same distance. Does this make any sense? (I ask, as I drain everything out of the tanks and carburetors of my snow blower and electric generator.)
I used to keep the tanks in my classic car and pick-up truck full but they are driven so seldomly that to keep the gas relatively fresh I keep the tank quantity in both rather low and try to put in about two gallons of fresh gas a month.

Ethanol is useless! No matter what I mix it with, it still tastes like crap. I'm going back to beer.

The US is using it's surplus food stock to manufacture ethanol. Now that law requires ever increasing use of enthanol as a fuel source has pushed up food cost. The US no longer has any significant surplus food. This caused a problem with other countries. They use to be able to purchase surplus food from the US if they had a crop failure. Now it's to expensive for the poor to buy food. So when you fillup your tank with some one elses meal, and ADM makes a nice profit. Isn't that just nice. The shocking thing about this is that this was all predictable.
If you want to find out more about ethanol Popular Science ran a article on it in a past issue.
