AB 2628, Assemblymember Paley's bill to allow usage of the HOV lanes by Hybrids that are SULEV or AT-PZEV and get at least 45 MPG (rated), passed the California Assembly today with a vote of 54 for and 14 against.

Thanks for all the comments to the Assemblymembers, they obviously helped!

Next step is the same procedure in the state Senate we just went through in the Assembly. Comments to your State Senators would be appreciated.

How many more places must it pass before we see it?

What is likely to happen in California Senate

As I understand it, AB2628 is co-authored by Senator Jeff Denham, a Republican from Modesto. The bill will go to the Transporation Committee, then when passed out of committee, to the Appropriations Committee, then finally to the floor of the Senate. Once it passes there it goes to the Governor for signing. All of those actions are expected to go favorably with signature by September or October at the latest. Assuming the Federal Government also approves the states allowing such lane usage (that too is expected whenever the energy bill passes) the law will go in to effect on 1/1/2005. Once it is in effect, you will get to buy an HOV lane usage pass at the DMV (expected to be $8).

I think Sev meant $8. If you type an 8 followed by a right parenthesis, you get the sunglass smiley. Like this: 8)!
