Alberta based Rally Racing Team continue to make motor sport history

Calgary, Alberta, 20 May 2003:

Two rallying amateurs will continue to write into the motor sport record books, as the crew of the world's first petrol/electric hybrid performance rally car. Jerzy Maslanka and Piotr Krol both of Calgary are competing in a Toyota Prius, the world's first mass production petrol/electric hybrid car.

Ability Rally Racing will enter their Toyota Prius into the fourth edition of Canadian Rally Championship known as the Rocky Mountain Rally. Competitors from as far as New York and Nova Scotia will be heading for Porcupine Hills, 80 km south of Calgary, Alberta for this 2 days sport event.

A 71hp 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 44hp electric motor power the Prius. The battery for the electric motor is continuously charged by both the petrol engine and by regenerative braking so the car requires no external charging. Capable of 160km/h in 13.4 seconds, the rally Prius will ran in the Group P2 (production) class.

"A year ago I was looking for something different, a car that would give a unique perspective on the rally events as well as car that we can use in our plans to help and support children with cerebral. Prius was the obvious choice and Toyota Canada along with Calgary car dealer, Heninger Toyota, were keen to assist us," said Jerzy.

"The conditions are going to be the toughest test yet for this new technology. Just to finish will be another victory in itself. We will drove the car hard over some of the roughest roads in Canada," explained Jerzy. Even with two motors the Prius is not the fastest car in the rally, but the aim for us from the beginning is to exploit the cars reliability and finish all 2003 Canadian Rally events," added Piotr Krol, co-driver of the Prius. "So far Prius finished all three Canadian Rally events," added Jerzy.

To meet safety and performance regulations, the Toyota Prius was prepared for Ability Rally Racing by Guyons Performance Centres of Calgary with Proflex suspension, seats and restraints by OMP, PIAA special lights, Yokohama tires on Speedline Corse wheels.

"As this was the first ever competition for Prius, everything had to be designed from scratch including the safety roll cage and the stronger front suspension. The car was finished just hours before leaving for Quebec to enter winter Rally de Maniwaki, back in February," explain John Kolody, the President of Guyons Performance Centres.
