After a week of driving our 2002 Prius, I've been most pleased with it. As mentioned, I did quite a bit of the maintenance myself. But poking around on the internet has turned up a number of reports from owners with rather serious problems ranging from eating massive amounts of tires, computer failures, burned-out inverters and transaxles, and so on. ALL expensive repairs that seem to not always be well-handled by Toyota repair facilities.

I'm hoping that these represent a tiny fraction of the whole and that the overall experience for most has been positive. We tend to keep our cars forever, driving well over 200,000 miles on each, and will drive them for sometimes 10-15 years or more. We just sold my wife's 91 Civic after getting this Prius.

2001 Prius driven for 109k miles, car is still doing fine, in other hands.

Rear wheel bearing assembly and ECU (TSB011-03) replaced in warranty

Power steering assembly replaced under warranty enhancement, just barely in time

SSCs for battery sealing and crank position sensor, no charge.

My last look with the miniscanner indicated that HV battery block voltages were typically w/in 0.15 volts, which seems pretty good.

I had the trans fluid changed first at about 60k, there was reported 'only a tiny amount' of metal flakes on the magnet. Fluid changed again after 14k to experiment with inline filter. The take-out was reasonably clean compared to others (the other Bob Wilson has the data). For my unit, I suppose that fluid changed every 30-40k miles will be adequate.

I got 33k miles from the original tires, but took them off with 4.5 mm tread remaining. Had used inflations in the 42/40 range. Second set of tires ran about 43 k miles (4.0 mm), also with inflation on the high side. Predicting about 50k for the third set, which are 185 width.

The 12 volt battery was replaced.

Everything else about the car just competent, satisfying and (in some sense) boring. To pass the time I focused on engine oil change analyses and tire wear rates. That, and the online special interest groups.

Not much to say after 105,000. I've not had any repairs other than things that wore out. I count the 12V battery as worn out, because I accidentally discharged it about 5 times in five years. Two bulbs, two sets wiper blades, two sets tires.
All switches and knobs still work. No leaks, no rattles.

This one has 54,000 miles so far and the one thing that has gone wrong was that the original 12 volt battery went dead, but this was because it sat for almost 6 months in rural PA where it gets freezing cold. The tires are absolutely shot. It seems like these cars wear out the tires pretty quick, so I will need to change those.

Mt single biggest concern is the traction battery simply because it isn't a matter of if, but when it does wear out. I am hoping that by the time this one goes, there will be lower cost replacements or aftermarket producers available because as of late, the cost hovers around $3,500-$4,000. I'd be OK with say- $2,000.

My 2003 has 107K miles and no problems. I have been through a few sets of tires (I get between 30 - 35K for the tires, but I am using 35/33 psi. I have had the brake warning lights come on twice over the last 1.5 years. During the warning light period there was a softer feeling in the brakes. They got better on their own after stopping and restarting the car. The service center said something about the ABS something or another but that it would be $1000 to replace. So I left as is and we'll see if it happens again or not.
I had some computer bit replaced early (within 40K), but I knew that would likely happen. They had a Service Bulletin out on it, but were not voluntarily replacing them.
During some cold months I had a period where the car didn't want to try to start. I just kept trying and it got better. That happened on and off for a few weeks and then not again so far.

I plan to drive my Prius until it dies or I win the lottery. But I am not at all bored with it nor do I plan to trade up until I feel like it is beginning to have mechanical issues.

pitt121172, your first move ought to be to a good brake shop where they can test the %water
content of your brake fluid. If if is above 1% (and esp. if above 2%), you should have the system flushed and refilled with new DOT3.

I don't want you to drive with sub-par brakes! All components of the system are available from salvage vehicle dismantlers if you need to consider more economical alternatives.
