In my desperate search for a Prius in California I have called about 30 Toyota dealers and gotten drastically different responses.

I am currently on two waiting lists, one at Toyotatown of Stockton, and the other at Toyota of Moreno Valley. Both offered a relatively short (2-3 month) waiting period at MSRP.

I thought I would share my experiences and maybe save some of you a few wasted phone calls to rip-off dealers.....

Two dealers surprised me by having cars available a few day or weeks after I called them. Unfortunately wrong color and charging one to two thousand over MSRP.
Nevertherless I was VERY tempted... have to stay strong...

I'm going to ammend the list by adding my favorite, Toyota of Long Beach. I don't have the address info right now, but phone is 562-494-4444.

I am also unaware of their wait time. I didn't buy mine here, but their service department is second to none. Julio Flores the service manager ROCKS.

I highly recommend them and the only thing I don't like about moving to WA is I have to find a new dealer for service.

Try 12% over, they LIED about it "Toyota made the MSRP go this high. It's mandatory because supply and demand are lopsided"

Wouldn't recommend it to my enemies.

How 12%? $3000 upsell on a $26k car (well, $25,910 at the time)
Total with everything (tax, etc) was $32,767. Don't believe or doubt me and want an invoice from MY sale? Just ask. Would happily fax it to you.

I've had my order in at Carson Toyota since October and today (about ten months later!) got a mass e-mail from them asking if I was still interested. I will tell them no, since I got one from Penske Toyota in Downey in March.

I encourage folks to report these few dealers that are raping customers to Toyota customer service.
Such a terrible practice and harms Toyota's image. As a Toyota owner, I'd reconsider a next new Toyota if this practice is allowed to continue. Reminds me of the $69k new Honda S2000 from a few years back.
Yes i know i live in a capitalistic society, but car mfg/dealers should understand why we often loath car dealers/salesmen.
At 15k prii per month produced, i hope this demand will cool soon.

I just picked up my new Prius from Quality Toyota in Corona. Placed my order in early August and it was ready last weekend. I actually turned down a black one about 3 weeks ago (was in escrow and didn't want the loan to show up before it closed.) They never charged my credit card for being on the list, the price was MSRP, no unwanted upgrades were added and the people there (Eric, Barbara & David) always responded to my emails and phone calls. Even though it was over 100 miles from home, it was worth it to deal with them.

MSRP party

Thank you markus for taking the time to share & detail your experience. You make the web an enourmously valuable tool for the consumer.

My own experience was order my 04 in Sep 03 w/60 day dlvry promise. Rcvd dlvry in 60 days at MSRP. That of course was early in 04 lifetime.

I now return to that dlr for all my service & will for any future Toyota business.

As far as Toyota's (or any mftr) corporate image...I believe various state & federal laws generally prevent mftrs of any products from controlling the prices their dlrs charge, either minimum or maximum.

That is why MSRP is Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price is a benchmark, not an dictate.
