Hello Forum, I have a 2001 prius that has died on my in a heavy rain and I can't get it restart. I have posted in other forums and we are kind of stumped, just wondering if there's another user knowledge base that might can assist.
On this car I had some trouble in the Spring of 2014 and replaced several parts before replacing the hybrid battery. Additionally, I've had the hybrid battery replaced under warranty again last summer. We drove the car 2000+ miles this fall until when in heavy rains it starts to shutter really bad then dies.

Same thing happened last spring and I just cleaned throttle body, replaced spark plugs, fuel injectors (some of this was probably not necessary but was inexpensive preventative maintenance I thought)- eventually the hybrid battery failed and was replaced

On this latest "die"- I can't revive it. I keep a scanguage hooked up and the only code it had when it died was a p3191. It will run for about 2 seconds then die. I've heard some say try and put it in neutral and see if it will run. It won't. In fact, it dies, then when you shift back to park it will run for a half second again then shut down.

I put some Seafoam in the tank filled it up with fresh fuel. I orginally thought I could drain it to see if there was any water in the fuel- but it is on a college campus and I cant.

Any other tips/suggestions before the tow?

It does sound a bit like water in the gas. It may have been in the gas when you refueled the car. In heavy rains it is possible for water to get into underground tanks. I've heard of it and had a friend some years ago that had to drain out his tank (because it was 1/3 full of water) after a fill up. He said there was a problem with water getting into the underground tank fill pipe. It was a carbureted engine and cleaned out with out any lasting problems..

You may have to have the tank looked at. I could also be the fuel filter (I think there is one inside the tank).

Please let us know what you find.
