I have recently aquired a 2003 Prius. It has the standard stereo and no navingation.

Is it possible to install an after-market navigation system? Are there any risks involved? Who does this or is it a DIY thing?

I was also wondering what would be involved in installing a CD player somewhere in the car. A single-disc player would be fine.

Has anybody tried the modification for the CD player here.... http://mywebpages.comcast.net/bumpelo/front.html? Have any luck with it?

Also, how much money are we talking here?

Thank you very much.

EDIT: The center console seems a little bit small. Are different models sold that we could install after purchase?

These guys are always a good place to start. Lots of things for the classic Prius, hopefully more soon for the '04.

I think you remove the LCD unit (they have instructions, and the car runs fine without it), and ship it to them, and they add a navigation system. I think they also have a kit to install a CD player.

I don't who else may do this, but these guys specialize in Prii. I haven't used them, but I have seen other posts suggesting them, and I don't remember any complaints.

I bought the Jensen CD/MP3 player from Harry at the site you listed for my 2002 Prius. It was easy to install-comes with all the connections, special brackets that fit the Prius, detailed instructions, etc. As you can see in his picture, it goes in the storage compartment in the bottom center of the dash. It works great-I am pleased with it.

Toyota factory CD

You can add the Toyota 1CD OR 6CD
changer. You can pay a dealer to
do it, or you can install it yourself.
The players do not read MP3 discs
like Harry's modified Jensen unit,
but they are your only other CD
players that are compatible with the
Prius' on-screen displays and such.

PN 08695-47020 should be for the setting kit
(Y-cable, and mounting brackets), which
you'll need to get. ~$35

PN 08601-00891-00 for the Toyota
6CD changer. it was a $550 option,
you can probably find it for less
if you shop around different Toyota
parts sources.

PN 08601-00869 for the Toyota 1CD
player. it was a $335 option, same
deal as the above changer...
