I am getting a Prius 2006 at the end of this month.
I believe the 2 big kids and hubby will fit. But, I have two (30lb) dogs that will be a challenge. They go every where with me...maybe less in the summer months. But, I would like to have a barrier that fits well dividing the last third of the car. The back area seemed to house them comfortably. But, will I not be able to get two crates in. Here is the thing..I have a over reactive dog that needs her own space. Has anyone heard/ or done a seperation divider of the back 1/3? So each dog has it's own space? If you have heard of a way to make it work my life could be alot easier. Also

Hey sporty! Welcome to the forum. I've had plenty of the teenager experience, but not the dog. In fact my daughter showed up this morning and switched cars on me. She wanted the Prius so I'm driving the Beetle home. Sanny here on the forum has made creative use of magnetic decals and changes them with the season. There are some pics somewhere on the site, or private message her and I bet she can send you more.

I lack the kids and husband so the the dog gets the back seat folded down (likes the open windows) and all the space back there. I would recomend use of the tie downs and possibly the car seat attachments to figure out how to attach some soft sided dividers. I sometimes just browse through the organizing/container stores for ideas and Home Depot too. Don't limit yourself by looking at just animal type supplies. Enjoy the car, also check out PriusChat for ideas and feedback.

Such a mod or system will, indeed, take some creativity. The problem is that the hatch forward hinge actually stops forward of the back of the back seat.

You'll probably need some sort of custom made seperator specifically designed to fit under the slope of the hatch. And if you want a barrier b/w the hatch area and back seat that'll need to be built in too as standard barriers like the Outland and such will not fit with the back seat in the upright position (got one, tried it, doesn't work).

If you can design and build something like this, esp. if it folds/collapses, is light weigh and custom fit you might have a ready market.

Have you considered the Highlander Hybrid? I'm not sure you are going to have a pleasant experience with the load you described using a Prius. I have both a Prius and the HiHy. The Highlander seems more appropriate for you.

some people on the Prius-UK yahoogroup seem to like either the Dog Bag or the Pet Tube for keeping pet fur localized, the pet secured, and is flexible for fitting into cars:

I'm picturing a yellow flame job (hot rod style) starting at the rear of the front fender wheel wells tapering to the back of the front doors.
Or..maybe just a nice conservative pin striping would be more suitable for "Married with kids". :wink:

doggie harness/seat cover question

I have a padded harness with snap buckle that I bought at a pet store. This would work. That item plus another attachment that slips into the seat belt are used when Maggie sits in the back seat.

Does anyone know what brand of seat cover might fit the back seat of a Prius? the one I tried for small cars was way too big.
