My 2005 Prius engine light came on out of the blue. $110k miles. Never caused me any grief. Reviewed the posted chats saying "not to worry". I'd like to avoid the day at the shop if possible. Can someone offer some straight talk about what this could mean?

Good suggestion on the gas cap. That is frequent cause and it's a cheap fix. If that doesn't fix the light, save the new cap, because you probably need it at some time in the future.

If the Check Engine Light is still there, many auto parts places will read the codes for free. Check with your local AutoZone, Checker, Pep Boys, etc., then post the fail codes. Those will help determine the exact cause (if it's not the gas cap).

2005 Prius Check Engine Light

Check engine light has gone on and off two times in past 6 months. Each time, it stays on for 24 hours. Diagnostics indicate stuck coolant control valve but cost to replace is quite high, over $400 at dealer. Not sure why light goes off by itself. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Some of the codes will be cleared after you turn your off and on several times (assuming the problem is not constant). This valve issue is not something to ignore and it could do damage to either your engine of the Hybrid unit (also cooled by it's own cooling system). It could result in some major repairs.

Hi, all,

Just a curiosity comment about the Check Engine Light NOT on my Prius, but on my wife's 2006 Mazda5. On 3 different trips from CT into Rhode Island on Rte 6, ONLY partially into the RETURN trip, the Check Engine Light came on in roughly the same place. I had the codes read at 2 different Auto Zones & the cooling system was supposedly to blame. The coolant level is near the full mark (way above the min. level) & the temperature gage works properly & is in the normal operating range. Each time the light has gone away by itself after a couple of days.

The thing that puzzles me is that the light turned on in each of the 3 cases only while in Rhode Island & in the same location within a mile or so. I wonder if some sort of electronic device in that area can trigger the light to go on by some sort of electro-magnetic pulse or something (yeah, I know I'm really reaching with that kind of thought), but we just went on an equal length trip into northern Massachusetts yesterday, & NO Check Engine Light on that trip & we've done other similar length trips within CT (east to west) recently without any CEL events.

Ken: It is a bit curious. Could be you are driving by a powerful radio (AM or FM) station and Some RF is picked up in the wiring. Could also be a radar. Once had my Prius act up because some nut left his boat radar on while in the harbor next to the shore. I just powered off and on then drove away (radar isn't good for humans or a Prius). Look for something like a radio tower or something similar near the highway as you pass through that area. Just a thought.
