Default 2005 Prius. No dash lights, speedo, won't shut off.

This has been going on for about two years here and there. How it started was that the dash lights all came on and stayed on. We had them shut off twice at the dealer, only to come back on within a couple days. Then it would not shut off randomly as well. Now all dash lights are gone including speedometer...I do have blinkers, headlights, control panel....Still doesn't want to power off at times and is happening more frequently. We have found that if we hold the power button down it will eventually shut off. When it will not shut off the car sounds as if it is "revving" and is loud.
We have two servicemen that work on our car. They can not get an error code. The have tested the 12v battery, tested all grounds, they even had the dash out. They called Toyota and they said they had no idea what the problem could be and had never heard of it. They said it could cost anywhere from $850-$4500 to fix depending on the problem...I don't know how Toyota can give an estimate if they say they don't know the problem...Either way, I have been researching online and have read about combination meters, ECM? Could this be the problem? If not, could someone please offer up some ideas or have you had this happen to you?
Thank you..

This does sound like the combination meter problem reported by others. Take it to another dealer, the one you've been using may not know what they're doing. If necessary call Toyota USA directly and ask them for pay for all or some of the replacement.

Is the 12v battery still the original battery? If so, I would start by replacing it. Problems on the 12v bus can cause several operational problems and quite often first surfaces with all warning lights coming on. Even if that doesn't solve the problem, you are still at the end of the service life for an original battery.

When you say Toyota tested the 12v battery, did they give you the voltage readings (load and no load)?

I started having the exact same symptoms on my 2006 Prius (107K miles) this morning. Has anyone learned of the root cause & solution to these issues? Thanks!

How old is your 12v battery? If it's the original, replace it and your problem will go away.

I've been having this intermittent problem for the last two weeks. My batt checked out good, and other posts here suggested a possible problem with grounding. Thankfully, the problem reoccurred while at my mechanics place. Since the problem affected a couple of different features, he started at the fuse box and found a faulty ground wire. After rye securing the wire, all systems came back on line and we are 3 days without a reocurrance.

My daughter is having the exact same problem on her '06 Prius. The car sometimes starts and the dash lights do not illuminate (speedo, fuel gauge and display screen is blank). Then the car will not turn off without repeated attempts at holding the start button down. I replaced the 12v battery with an Optima 1 year ago so that is not the problem.
This issue has been very infrequent for about 2 years, however it has been happening more and more in the last 60 days (a dozen times).

Check the 12v battery terminals and make sure they are clean and tight.

my car has been doing the same thing. today it was dark all day, several stops and starts - sometimes it will come back on. but I also have developed a noise, clicking, knocking, sounds like in the area under the radio. My battery has been replaced a year or two ago with another problem.

What is a combination meter? my dealer said i need a new display, but then it would not work at all and $K$ it has worked for weeks, maybe months before acting up, and it will not shut off, i press start and park and eventually.
However today, a couple times the key did come out and it shut down.

I'm a service manager for a small little repair shop. A customer had her Prius towed in about two months ago. She described the problem that you are having. We tested the 12v battery in the back it was good. Checked reported problems database no hits. We could not duplicate the problem. After 2 weeks, we returned the car to her since we couldn't duplicate the problem. A week later she has the car towed in again, she ran it out of gas... no charge sent her on her way. a couple of weeks later and she has it towed in. Again she ran it out of gas. She had finally had it with the car, and was getting another car from her family; and sold me her problem child. She drove it for a few more days and the car was fine, we did the paper work and her problem became mine. Car was fine, I cleaned it up a little after work, parked some custoemr vehicles on thelot and got in the car to go home.

Then the dash was black and the the center screen(MFD) was working. I turned on the headlights those worked, I put the car in drive and the car worked! So I drove home using the phones map function for a speedometer. Next morning same thing , I drove into work and parked the car. That afternoon the car worked perfectly, even for the drive home! Next morning the problem reappeared, so I drove into work, and had a long time to think about this problem. I'm thinking it's a temperature related problem; but I'll have to remove the Instrument Cluster to fix it.

I get to work and to do a little research on "How to remove the dash on a Prius" went to Youtube. Low and behold! The answer to the problem was right there in the first video notes! I'm checking off the symptoms, and going ok that's the solution! So the guy in the video also repairs instrument clusters, If you send him your cluster he will fix it for you and send it back to you for $199. I called the dealer, and Dealer list price is $400+ and a week turnaround time. This guy will send it back to you overnight. Not bad I thought.

doing more research Dorman has a remanufactured unit available, part #599-550. I found online carID has it listed for $179 plus a $300 core charge. What this means is that they will charge your credit card $479 dollars, and send you the part. When they get your old part they will credit back to you $300 dollars. Not wanting to tie up my $300 dollars, I got it through my local supplier and gave them the core as I got the part, tieing up their money not mine.

https://www.carid.com/dorman/remanuf...IaAvpOEALw_wcB

Installed and running perfectly the last two days. I'm willing to bet your problem is your Instrument Cluster. If you were my customer that is where I would head first.

If you're local to the SF Bayarea we can do this at our shop PM me. IF you are a DIYer then here's all the info you need. IF we do repair at the shop the part is going to cost more than online pricing. That's how I pay my bills. A little profit from parts and a little profit on labor, if you're not good with this then don't PM me.
