Default 03 Prius Warning Lights

A week ago, the master warning light, check engine light, and hybrid system warning light came on when I started the car. These lights reset themselves after the second engine restart. Last Saturday, these same lights came on again and stayed on, even during the drive to Toyota of Killeen. Unfortunately, the Prius tech had the day off so Monday was the earliest day my car could be fixed. Picked up my car Monday afternoon. The code was P3191. Parts replaced was the engine control computer ($1,092.00) and a relay ($70.26). The computer was replaced under the hybrid warranty; the relay under the extended warranty. My cost was zero dollars. :) Mileage on the car was 42,302.

Actually the ECM (which is for ICE) is covered under the emissions warranty which is close to but not exactly the same as the hybrid warranty. The HV ECU is a different module which is covered under the hybrid warranty.

At least it is that way for 2G.

By the way, P3191 means 'Engine did not start'. Pretty generic.

Default warning light

GreenPrius, this is perhaps the most common covered repair on the 2001-2003 Prius. I would be greatly surprised if the problem ever recurs.

If it is possible to determine from your paperwork, what is the exact part number of the ECU they installed? I am interested in the final two digits in particular as they are essentially the 'version number'. Curious about what the newest version is.

Tochatihu,
The relay P/N is 90080-87026. The engine control computer P/N is 89661-47054. Hope this answers your question.

Yes it does; thanks GreenPrius03. '...54' is the newest ECU version that I know of.

Previous part numbers for the ECM are listed as:
8966147030
8966147031
8966147050
8966147051

Current part number for the ECM is:
8966147054

Per the TSB I suspect that your dealer used (quite common, had this on my 2001, only needed the ECM):
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/toy ... 011-03.pdf
US TSB EG011-03
June 12, 2003, Master, Hybrid & M.I.L. "ON" P3190/P3191 & P3101, 2001-2003 Prius. Replaces TSB EG012-02. (Fix: may replace circuit opening relay assembly, ECM (engine control module), and/or fuel tank assembly.)

ECM is under the Federal Emissions warranty for 96 months/80,000 miles.

Fuel tank is under the basic new vehicle warranty for 36 months/36,000 miles, unless you are in CA, MA, or VT where it is covered under the CA emissions warranty for 84 months/70,000 miles.

The circuit opening relay is only covered under the basic new vehicle warranty for 36 months/36,000 miles.

Of course, if you have an extended warranty still in effect, you should be covered as well.
