Unhappy Electric problem

2005 prius. The a/c had lessened it power, now the fan has completely stopped and I get no cool air. Living in Florida this is a needed function.

I have an intermittent problem with my dash and the other screen going dark. At those times it will not shut off normally and I have to go thru a combination of hitting both buttons to get my key out and stop the engine. The a/c had decreased function, then I noticed the fan and a/c would be stronger when the dash blacked out. Which lead me to believe it it electrical.
I can't afford to take to Toyota who in the past wanted to put a whole new dash module in for more the cars value, which I don't think is the problem because a bad screen should not affect ignition.??

Now the a/c has completely stopped as well as the very weak fan.

Is this something that can be fixed reasonably? my neighbor fixed my water pump for me previously.

I have similar problems with my 2005 Prius as well; let's compare notes:

My dashboard has been going blank sporadically; this includes the speedometer, the fuel gage and the odometer. It also affects the function of the computer screen which would normally display the mpg rate; when the dashboard goes blank, this display no longer shows the mpg rate, nor does it show the outside temp; however, the display continues to show that the battery is recharging.

What is most disconcerting when this happens is that it becomes difficult if not next to impossible to shut off the Prius; I have also discovered that it is impossible to lock the car with the remote while the vehicle is still "on". Since this has been happening quite often lately, I have been in the habit of not placing the remote key into the key slot; I can start the vehicle without the key in the slot. I can then leave the vehicle in park with the remote key in hand, and lock the car manually.

Without the dashboard lights, it is difficult to know for certain that the Prius has actually turned off. However, with the computer screen display showing at least some of the features it is supposed to show, I can tell when the Prius shuts off when this screen finally goes blank. It usually take awhile of waiting - an hour or so in park - for the computer to function properly enough to allow me to shut off the Prius.

My mechanic (not associated with Toyota) has said that he has contacted Toyota about this problem; the response he got was that the onboard computer was "getting old"...the computer hardware was short circuiting.

I intend to approach my mechanic once again to see if we can replace this computer, and how much that would cost. I have over 160,000 miles on this vehicle, so it may be time for a trade-in.

Comments are welcomed.

Unhappy Dash

Your mechanic must know my doctor he uses that 'old' excuse at times.

I did some reading and someplace someone said something about 'Combination meter' and 'Instrument clusters'. I am sure you must know more about this than I do. I went to the local auto electronics shop and he didn't have a clue about Prius electronics. Says something about the small town I live in.

Anyway, what I surmised is that the displays have a module that runs them, either both or singular, and apparently it also has something to do with my a/c. A Controller if you will. My dealer said I needed to replace the unit for ~$2500 ea. From what I understand the controller is about $200-300. It is electronic problem.

The problem is that this part along with the displays, are behind the dash which has to be disassembled to get at the unit. I hoped you could get at it thru the engine side, but this what I saw on a YouTube video.. only it was a diff year and very diff from my 05.

I have abt 123k miles, the engine works fine and a new car is not in the plan for another year. Hmm.. you know what they say about the best laid plans.... I really need the a/c I live in central Florida.

My car does that not shutting off thing too... you have to hit the start button the same time as the park button a few times or longer than my patience at times... then I shuts off.
My car, a 2005, needs the key inserted to start to my knowledge. Yours must be a newer model if you don't need to.

Mapquest will give you your speed if you are concerned. My one display, with the a/c control, etc. was so weak I could hardly read it, now it has brightened up a little at times.. it is possessed, maybe an exorcism will work
Hope you have better luck!

yes the display problem is a computer board in the display. each has it's own. The board can be replaced. I found someone who does it for about $300 per panel. I am still trying to save up the money. I just had a $300 bill to fix one of the pumps.. yeah the electronic controller.
Now my car has another problem, just broke down, the alternator I think. Since it broke on Fri night, I have to wait for Mon to have it 'officially diagnosed' before fixing it.
Still paying off my pump, I want a newer car sooo bad!
