BUG? Navigation System MUTES bluetooth phone call in 2007

Greetings, all. I owned a fully loaded 2005 Prius, which I traded in last year for a 2007 model. I have found a very annoying bug in the 2007 model and I would like to know if someone there can test this in yours.

The bug involves the Navigation System voice overriding an in-progress bluetooth phone call. In the 2005 model, if I was in a call, the nav system would just be silent (no speech) until I hung up. In the 2007, it usually just talks even if I am in the middle of a call, and during the speech, the caller cannot hear anything, and I cannot hear them -- completely muted. This is very annoying.

ANNOYING EXAMPLE: If I start a call, the screen goes to the phone call screen. If I press "Map" to get back to the map (so I can see where I am going while I talk to the caller), pressing that button causes the nav to speak, muting the caller.

There are times when it works like it should (and like the 2005 model did), but I haven't quite figured out what the key is. I *think* it may have to do with if I establish the call (dial) from the Prius screen (which I can't do unless stopped). In that situation, perhaps it will work properly.

But, if I dial a call from my cell phone, or answer a call, the Nav System will just talk and mute the call.

Can someone test this? I have tried this using a Sprint Treo 650, then later an AT&T iPhone. Both have the same problem, so I do not believe it is phone related. (And, again, the 2005 was fine.)

To test -- start up navigation system, then dial a call from your phone handset. Once it connects and you hear it through bluetooth, press the MAP button to switch to the Map screen. Please let me know if this causes your nav system to speak, muting the call.

I had an open ticket with Toyota on this, but they clearly had no idea what I was talking about. My next step is to post a video for them to watch to demonstrate the problem (my local dealers are also unfamiliar with anything involving the nav system).

Anyone?

Allen,
Mine is an '06 and I use a Motorola Razy V3 with BlueTooth. I tried to duplicate the process you described, and had no problem. The nav voice was muted during the phone call.
I hope you are successful in getting yours fixed, and come back and let us know how it was done.
Good luck.
Roger

Yup, I have the same issue with my 2007 Prius. Since this is my first Prius (and first in-car bluetooth experience) I just assumed that is how it was supposed to work. I thought it was a "feature" not a "bug."

I agree it is quite annoying. There I am driving to an unknown destination via GPS. I want to place a call to my wife so I push the steering wheel "phone" button and the MFD changes to the speed dial screen. I tap the button for my wife -- then I hit the destination button on the MFD to get back to the map. All audio cuts out for about 3-5 seconds while the map is reloaded followed by the GPS voice announcing my next move ("proceed for 12 more miles on I-5 North") which is another 3-5 seconds. As long as my wife doesn't pick up on the first ring everything is ok!

I don't think I necessarily want the GPS voice to be completely muted while I'm on a call (since I'm relying on it to get me to my destination) but I would like to be able to carry on a conversation simultaneously.

Just an update to this. I've now heard from others with the same issue in an 2007, and someone with the problem in a 2006. As I mentioned in my first post, my 2005 did NOT do this.

I opened a case with Toyota back in October 2007, but they wanted me to take my car in to a dealer so they could check it out. My dealer's Prius tech was not there on weekends (when I do my oil changes) so I never got around to it. In May 2008 I re-opened a ticket with Toyota, and finally -- just a few weeks ago -- took my Prius in. I was able to demonstrate the bug to the Service Manager at my dealer.

I was also having a non-related issue where my navigation system screen would go black, then reset to the "I agree" screen -- maybe a loose connection. Toyota suggested my dealer replace my navigation system, which they did yesterday.

The bug remains, and in the process I lost all my navigation data.

Anyway, if anyone else is havnig issues with this, please let me know. I am compiling a list of others here, and on the Prius Chat site, and maybe we can get Toyota to work on a fix.

So you are saying that you think talking on the phone is a higher priority than following driving directions?

Yes, I think humans over machines most of the time. ;-)

(It annoys me because it often happens when I'm talking to someone I am driving to see, and they ask how far away I am, then I hit the map button to see my ETA and...)

I've now been expecting a call back "within 24 hours" from the Toyota case manager dealing with this problem -- I've called several times and spoken to someone else who updated the case and assured me my case manager would call me back "tomorrow." Great customer service ;-)
