Default Hymotion BREM plug-in shows some promise

I attended Solarfest in Vermont yesterday and Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS)--my electric co.--as part of their "plug'n go" program, featured one of their fleet vehicles: an '06 or '07 Prius fitted with a Hymotion Battery Range Extender Module (BREM) making the Prius a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). It's unique in that it integrates into the current HSD system. The unit didn't take up too much space in the hatch area, rising a few inches above the floor height. A 12V outlet was built into the bumper. It enables this vehicle to run in EV mode for an average of 20 miles. Mileage would vary greatly with little to no gas used for short commutes, to 75-100 MPG for medium commutes and perhaps only 10 MPG better for long ones (unless plug-in is available on the road or at the destination). Off-peak rate plug-ins would allow transportation for equivalent gas prices of less than $1/gal.

While allowing significantly better MPG and running much cleaner then the standard Prius (plus electric generation is two to three times as efficient as ICEs and emissions are much better controlled at a powerplant than from a vehicle tailpipe), this is apparently (although no costs are provided) not going to be a long term money-making proposition. Also, the warranty would be affected for at least the parts directly associated with the installation.

Disappointingly, as stated, no costs are provided either from CVPS or the Hymotion site. Hymotion (located in Ontario, Canada) currently offers it for fleets only. A form at the site can be filled by individuals when the BREMs become available to the public in 2008. Here's the specs.
