Default Toyota Extra Care-Platinum advice

When I recently picked up my new Prius, I was confronted with a decision that I was not expecting....getting the extra coverage.

It was explained that ONE cost of a major part after warrantee expired could cost as much as the coverage on a Prius. I felt it to be a scare tactic...but on the other hand...I drive about 20,000/year. Maybe it is worth it because I plan to keep the car at least 3 years?????

What experience have you had with this decision? Is it a good one, or not very necessary? (The coverage cost through the dealer was about $1400) I looked on line and found "Warranty Direct". Any words on this company?

I am so happy there is a priusonline site and appreciate all the helpful advice I find here. By the way, I LOVE my car!!!!!

In my opinion it is a waste of your money. There are a lot of personal opinions about this topic. If you search the forum you will see many who swear by it and others who feel the way I do. If you decide to buy, you can get an extended warranty from Toyota for less than $1000. Again, there is information on this forum.

Yes, there are definately two opinions here on the extended warranties. You haven't exactly purchased a standard reliable Toyota. More like a sort of "unknown" computer on four wheels.
If you plan to sell in three years with 60,000 miles on the car after the magic 3 and 36,000, the car won't be worth much without the extended warranty. (which is transferrable) From info you can find here the Toyota Platinum extended costs the dealer about $650.00 and lists for $1600.
There are many Toyota dealers nation wide who will sell you the Platinum for less than $1,000. (and even some who want as much as $2,000.) More like $875.00 to $975.00 seems to be the average.
If you intend to check this site out often I would suggest the extended, just for your own peace of mind.

Hyperion, I think you are off base about the Prius not being worth much after the warranty expires. The Prius has one of the best resale values in the industry. Also keep in mind that the Hybrid Synergy Drive has an 8 year warranty (10 years in some states). I don't think the extended warranty is that much of a selling point. The condition of the vehicle and maintaining good service records go a long way when selling the car.

I probably should have clarified, if I knew anything at all about the systems in a Prius I would not touch a 3 yr old used one with 60,000 miles unless it had an extended warranty. Especially if I had a choice.

The hybrid warranty only covers the HV battery, its ECU, the HV ECU and the inverter. The Power Split Device (PSD) is covered under the standard 60K drivetrain warranty. The engine ECM is covered by the emissions warranty for 80K/96 months. The ECM and the HV ECU were the most problematic issues for a while for some, but fortunately both are reprogrammable and covered by a rather lengthy warranty besides.

Normally I recommend getting the extended warranty since although the car is quite reliable and Toyota in general makes reliable cars, even the accessory electronics can go bad from time to time and can be quite expensive to replace. Since you are only going to keep the car for 36 moths/60K, it might be worth it to you to forgo the extended warranty. If you do go for a warranty, check out the sponsor forum at PriusChat.com for a dealer that sells Toyota backed extended warranty at reasonable prices. You may consider the warranty that has less time on it but same miles.

Default extended warranty

the Toyota warranty is available from other sources for right around $1000. There is no requirement to buy it when your car has 0 miles; the limit to buy is 36k miles. So you have some time to read (our endless) opinions on the subject before deciding.

I would vote against an aftermarket warranty from the company you mention or any other. If you can get them to confirm in writing that they will unequivocally cover all the various expensive components, objection withdrawn. But I just don't trust 'em.

Couldn't get Toyota to cover it, since it was a known problem, huh? I was under the impression that there were refurbs available for a whole lot less.

At the very least, might have been able to get one from salvage.

But I did price out various ECUs at an online OEM parts store. List prices were ridiculous, and their prices though lower, not much better. However it made me skeptical about their prices when the NAV DVD was listed as $800. An update can be had for $250 retail at the dealer parts counter.

The dealer said the car was out of warranty, w/72K. Just isn't the NAV system that doesn't work: A/C; INFO; RADIO; PHONE. Everything goes thru it. Only takes an hour to replace & they had it disconnected & reconnected, but didn't bring it to life. Must be short in the screen OR......
